The Happy Universe Multi-Sports Center (CHUMS) in Cotonou buzzed with excitement on September 27, 2022, as it hosted the inaugural CHUMS U15 Open Challenge. This thrilling badminton tournament, organized by the NGO Happy Universe in partnership with the Benin Badminton Federation (FBBa), brought together over 100 young athletes from ten clubs across Cotonou and its surrounding areas.

The competition saw fierce battles on the court as aspiring badminton stars from clubs like Dynamo, friendship, Canon, and Antilope showcased their skills. raliatou tairou, Director of the CHUMS center, expressed her delight at welcoming these promising young athletes, emphasizing their role as the future of badminton in Benin. She highlighted the tournamentS potential to inspire more children to embrace the sport and unearth hidden talents. Tairou also encouraged parents to guide their children towards positive pursuits like badminton,fostering a brighter future for them.

Steve Falola, vice-President of the FBBa, commended Happy Universe for their initiative and urged the young athletes to deliver remarkable performances, ensuring the event’s continued success.

Adding to the vibrant atmosphere, the tournament featured a captivating wushu demonstration and engaging activities for participants and spectators alike.

After intense matches,Antilope BC emerged victorious,claiming the top spot. dynamo BC and Center Happy Universe secured second and third place respectively.All participating clubs received prizes, making the event a resounding success for everyone involved.

SF: It’s a powerful testament to the growing popularity and potential of badminton in Benin. Seeing so many young talents eager to compete and showcase their skills fills us with optimism for the future. It’s vital that we nurture this burgeoning interest and provide these aspiring athletes with the support they need to blossom.

Moderator: Raliatou Tairou, Director of the CHUMS center, stressed the importance of inspiring more children to embrace badminton and unearth hidden talents. Do you agree with her stance, and what strategies can be implemented to achieve this goal?

SF: I wholeheartedly agree. We need to go beyond just organizing tournaments. We must actively engage with schools and communities, introduce badminton at a grassroots level, and make it accessible to all.

SF: we’re definitely aiming to make this tournament an annual event, a platform where young talent can flourish and compete against the best. Continued collaboration between the FBBa, NGOs like Happy Universe, and local communities is key.

Moderator: We can certainly see the positive impact this event has had. what message would you give to aspiring young badminton players in Benin and beyond?

SF: Believe in yourselves, work hard, and never give up on your dreams. the world of badminton is full of opportunities, and with passion and dedication, anything is absolutely possible.
