Novak Djokovic never at his best again? Richard Gasquet raises doubts ahead of Dubai tournament

After returning to his Serbian homeland, Djokovic has not yet commented on the incident, but announced that he would soon be able to present his version of what happened in Australia:

“I ask for your patience and in the next seven to ten days I will address the media in more detail and, so to speak, with my version and everything that happened in Australia,” said the world number one at a joint press conference with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.
The 34-year-old could face further problems as the season progresses if he refuses to be vaccinated against the coronavirus. Vaccination is an entry requirement in many countries, and only vaccinated players are allowed to compete in a number of tennis competitions. In any case, Djokovic is set for the ATP 500 tournament in Dubai, which starts on February 21. Tennis stars can compete here regardless of their vaccination status.

Will he find his way back to his top form there? His French colleague Richard Gasquet expresses cautious doubts: “What happened in Australia was very tough for Djokovic. It will be interesting to see how he returns to Dubai. You might think that this will increase his motivation, but this is different. He’s used to fighting the crowd, his rivals and sometimes himself, but this must have been a lot harder for him.”

The Serb is set to make his much-anticipated comeback in the Middle East. His last match on the tour was the semi-final loss to Alexander Zverev at the ATP Finals in November 2021.
