Colby Stevenson miraculously survives a car accident with serious injuries. The American is fighting his way back to life and his sport. With a titanium plate in his head, he wins silver in the Big Air contest in Beijing at the Olympic Games.

Colby Stevenson spun on the ramp and backed up to the take-off. The American took off in the Big Air contest at the Beijing Olympics, twirled several times in the air and landed the perfect reverse jump. The attempt catapulted him to second place, with Stevenson winning the silver medal behind Norway’s Birk Ruud.

The story behind this triumph is dramatic. In 2016, Stevenson miraculously survived a serious car accident. After a Big Air event in Oregon, he drove a friend who had broken his leg home in his car. Stevenson fell into a microsleep during the long drive, lost control of the car, and went off the freeway.

Stevenson was seriously injured in the accident. His skull was fractured several times. He was placed in an induced coma by doctors at a specialty clinic in Salt Lake City. They put a titanium plate in his skull. “My brain was swollen by eight millimeters. From nine millimeters, the brain is damaged,” said Stevenson.

“I just enjoy every moment.”

The American struggled through months of rehab and celebrated his first World Cup slopestyle victory just eight months after his fatal accident. “Your character is formed in the tougher times of your life. When you’re dealt bad cards, you have to look at it positively and still fight for your dreams, even if they seem difficult to achieve,” said Stevenson. It was a tough road for him: “But it seems like I’m surrounded by the right people right now. I just enjoy every moment, travel the world and keep doing what I love.”
