Indian archer Pooja made history on Sunday by becoming the first to compete in the final of an individual section of the Para World Championships here.
The 24-year-old came from 0-2 down to beat Great Britain’s Hazel Chaisty 6-2 to secure India at least a second silver medal of the current tournament.
In her quest to become India’s first para archery world champion, Pooja will face Italy’s Petrilli Vincenza later today.
India are also in contention for a second medal on the day, and third overall, as Pooja and her namesake and senior teammate Pooja Khanna will fight for a team bronze medal, taking on rivals Mongolia.
The mixed duo of Shyam Sundar Swami and Jyoti Baliyan had already opened India’s account with a silver medal — the country’s first medal at the World Para Archery Championships.
India competed in two world championships – Beijing 2017 and Den Bosch 2019 – when Rakesh Kumar came close to winning a bronze medal.
Qualified as the fourth seed, Pooja started her campaign by beating Pooja Khanna 7-1.
In the quarters, she overcame fierce resistance from Svetlana Barantseva to emerge 6-4 winner.
