Martínez Steps In for Injured Granollers in Davis Cup Tie
Spanish tennis star Pedro Martínez will be joining the national team for thier upcoming Davis Cup Qualifier against Romania. This change comes after veteran player Marcel Granollers was forced to withdraw due to a shoulder injury sustained during the ATP 500 tournament in Acapulco.
The Royal Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET) announced the substitution on Sunday, confirming that Martínez, currently competing in the Santiago Open in Chile, will travel directly to Marbella following the tournament.
This isn’t Martínez’s first experience with the Davis Cup squad. The 24-year-old from Alzira was called upon as a last-minute replacement for Carlos Alcaraz during the 2021 Davis Cup Finals in Madrid. Although he didn’t get a chance to play then, his experience will be valuable as he steps into the team this time.
Martínez is currently vying for his first ATP title in Santiago, a feat that would propel him into the world’s top 50 rankings.
The rest of the Spanish team, including Roberto Bautista, Pablo Carreño, Carlos Alcaraz, and Alejandro Davidovich, along with captain Sergi Bruguera and the coaching staff, are expected to arrive in Marbella on Sunday. The tie against Romania is scheduled for March 4th and 5th at the Puente Romano Tennis Club.
