PGA: Niemann dominant from start to finish

Chilean golfer Joaquin Niemann led the Genesis Invitational from start to finish, claiming the winner’s trophy at the end of the final round on Sunday in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

Niemann had given 63 (-8) cards in each of the first two rounds, which allowed him to sit atop the standings after 18 and 36 holes. A third round of 68 (-3) allowed him to maintain his first place.

On the final day of competition, Niemann played the par 71, sinking an eagle, two birdies and a bogey in the first 11 pennants. With a comfortable lead – he who led by six shots at one point in the fourth round – Niemann was able to play more safely. From bogeys to 14e and 15e pennants did not inconvenience him.

He eventually finished the event with a cumulative 265 (-19). He was never really worried by his closest pursuers, the Americans Collin Morikawa and Cameron Young, who finished with two strikes.

Niemann thus won his second career PGA event, his last victory dating back to 2019.

None of the Canadians competing at the start of the competition were able to secure their ticket to the weekend rounds.

PGA Tour golfers will now cross the country to take part in the next competition, the Honda Classic, to be held February 24-27 in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
