American Scottie Scheffler defeated compatriot Patrick Cantlay on the third overtime hole of the Waste Management Open in Phoenix, Ariz., on Sunday to win the PGA event.
After the regulation 72 holes, the two men posted a cumulative of 268 (-16), they who had each given a card of 67 (-4) at the end of their last round.
So they had to return to the 18th tee, where they each played par on the first extra hole. The two golfers repeated the exercise, but the result was the same.
Scheffler eventually birdied the third extra hole, while Cantlay was unable to equalize.
Only two of the six Canadians present at the tournament were able to participate in the last two rounds of the competition, but the Quebecer Étienne Papineau, who was in his first experience in the PGA, was not one of them.
It was rather Adam Hadwin and Corey Conners who avoided the ax. The former finished the event with a cumulative of 276 (-8), which earned him a tie for 26th place. For his part, Conners finished his 72 holes tied for 38th place, due to a cumulative of 279 (-5).
Papineau, he had given two identical cards of 73 (+2) in each of his rounds. A score of 146 (+4), had placed him six shots from the cut, established at 140 (-2) shots.
Theegala unable to keep pace
Papineau’s playing partner in the first two rounds, American Sahith Theegala, who had finished the second and third days of activities at the top of the standings, was unable to continue his momentum.
His round of 70 (-1), his worst of the tournament, gave him a score of 269 (-15), just one shot from going into overtime with Cantlay and Scheffler. A bogey at the 17th pennant will have been fateful for him.
