Jose Mourinho was sentenced to a ban on accompanying AS Roma for two matches. That was the aftermath of his insulting the referee by bringing up the Calciopoli problem.

The incident occurred in AS Roma’s match against Hellas Verona at the Stadio Olimpico which ended 2-2. Mourinho was given a red card in injury time.

Mourinho then tracked, until it was secured by two people, before finally wanting to leave the field of play. Mourinho then imitated the gesture of making a call towards referee Luca Pairetto.

Luca Pairetto is the son of former referee Pierluigi Pairetto, who was involved in the 2006 Calciopoli issue. Pierluigi Pairetto is known to have been in frequent telephone contact with then Juventus director Luciano Moggi, but insisted on communicating with directors from various other clubs as well.

Quoted from Football Italia, the phone gesture was seen as a direct reference to the Calciopoli scandal, but the Disciplinary Commission report noted that Mourinho also approached the referee after the final whistle in the tunnel to ‘continue that serious innuendo’.

In addition to a two-match ban, Mourinho was also fined 20,000 euros and Roma manager Tiago Pinto was suspended until March 8, while Mourinho’s assistant Luis Da Costa Nuno Santos was given a two-match suspension on the touchline.

Fitness coach Stefano Rapetti was suspended for one game and given a 5,000 euro fine for insulting people on the Verona bench, including ‘blasphemous phrases’.
