Schalke distances itself from Russia sponsor.
On the day of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Schalke coach Dimitrios Grammozis (43) appeared at the game day PK in a neutral club jacket. While the Gazprom logo was still emblazoned there last weekend, there was nothing left of it this time.

The main Russian sponsor (contract until 2025) pays Schalke nine million euros a year in the second division. 15 million per season plus a bonus of three million beckon if promoted. Whether and how long this will remain so is an open question.
There was also a staff quake in the Schalke supervisory board!
Matthias Warnig (66) resigned from the Royal Blues’ supervisory board. He was sent to the committee by Russia’s sponsor Gazprom.
A club statement on Thursday morning said: “Matthias Warnig informed the supervisory board of FC Schalke 04 on Thursday (February 24) that he was resigning from his supervisory board mandate with immediate effect. The 66-year-old had been a member of the committee since July 2019 as a co-opted member, sent by the main sponsor GAZPROM.”
It also said: “After completing all the necessary formalities, Warnig will no longer be part of the Royal Blues’ supervisory board.”
