Serie A is looking for the president in the palaces of power. And Mauro Masi is among the candidates

The A league he looks for his new president, and looks for him in the palaces of power, among the state boyars. Now there are also candidates. The first two, the number one of Confindustria Carlo Bonomi and the head of the cabinet of the Ministry of Culture Lorenzo Casini, they were known. The third, the former member of the ECB Lorenzo Bini Smaghi, had been added in the last few days. At the last moment, a fourth name also comes up: Mauro Masiformer director general of Rai and current president of Consapfriend of Gianni Letta.

Officially, these are four profiles from which Serie A patrons will have to choose. It will be yet another gang war of the Italian football, split as always. On the one hand the Lotitian wing, on the other the one that refers to the president of FederCalcio, Gabriele Gravina. On the table, different visions of football and its top league (above all the entry of foreign investment funds, the real game that has been played for years in Football League), which will also depend on the president who will be elected.

The most controversial name, officially released for a week now, is known, and it is that of Carlo Bonomi: president of Confindustria, sponsored by the Milanese, in particular by Beppe Marotta e Paolo Scaroni, senior clerk of Lega Calcio, which in the last two years has kept Dal Pino under his wing and now would like to dictate the successor, certainly appreciated also in Figs. There has already been half a vote on him, or rather only one vote in the last Lega assembly, an authentic one shipwreck for his candidacy, which however Marotta & Co. they tried to preserve and re-propose. The third vote is enough 11 preferences and he remains the first option for that side that could also have the majority. But before applying, he should solve the problems at home, in Confindustriawhere many have turned up their noses on this possible football commitment (formalized while it was at Maldives, on their honeymoon). Himself, in a recent interview with Corriere dello Sportstated that he is only available in case of one large convergence, which does not seem to be there. He seemed to be looking more for an honorable exit than for the votes needed for the election.

This is why in the last few days the name of Lorenzo Bini Smaghi, presented as a candidate of the American properties, but actually liked only by some of them, more or less from the same area that Bonomi had proposed. Here too, in fact, there is no lack of connection with Scaroni, in the person of Jacopo Mazzeiformer president ofCr organization Florence, cousin of Bini Smaghi but also consuocero of the president of Milan. It is a authoritative profileinternational, former member of the executive committee of European Central Bank from June 2005 to November 10, 2011, connoisseur of Mario Draghi (that Serie A always hopes to be able to hook, to get money and favors from the government). With the contraindication, however, of never having dealt with football, and perhaps not even too much desire to meddle with it.

On the other side, for now only one name has come out: that of Lorenzo Casini, head of the cabinet of Dario Franceschini to the Ministry of Culture, former member of the Guarantee College of Conestherefore expert in sports justice and sports. He is presented as Lotito’s candidate but in reality it was the patron of Napoli who proposed him Aurelio De Laurentiis (maybe the Lazio president has another ace up his sleeve?). The last name was added to the list at the last minute but had been circulating for weeks, and it is a bit of a mystery: no one assumes the authorship of Mauro Masi’s candidacy, which each front attributes to the other. What is certain is that in the past he has held prestigious political positions, from the management of Rai to the secretariat of Palazzo Chigi, in the Berlusconian orbit. You know Lotito (he is the president of Banca del Fucinowhich was the reference institution of one of the trusts of the Salernowith Igea Banca he also collaborated with Lazio). But if it is true that Bonomi and Bini Smaghi are going towards the forfeit then it could be the last card of the Scaroni & C group.

The four, however, will not parade on Friday in assembly: the presentation to the Serie A presidents has been postponed for a week. If that happens, applicants don’t seem so likely to undergo a “interview”, with the risk of public humiliation, especially if the final vote were to be held in the same assembly (for now set for 3 March, but it could slip in a chain). Theoretically, the president should come out of this shortlist of candidates but given the conditions it is not possible to exclude that none of them succeed and in the end a new nameto surprise.
