Stan Wawrinka at his last appearance on the ATP tour: 2021 in Doha

Stan Wawrinka was one of those men who Rafael Nadal long withheld his second triumph at the Australian Open. After Nadal in the 2012 final against Novak Djokovic missed many chances, the Spaniard, plagued by back problems, had to admit defeat two years later in the Wawrinka final. For the Swiss, it was the first major victory ever, two more were to follow: 2015 in Roland Garros and 2016 at the US Open. Nadal found his second fortune in Melbourne last Sunday, Wawrinka will have looked closely. Because like Nadal, he has been struggling with injury problems in recent years, mainly in the knee.

It has been so long since Stan Wawrinka has been heard that the tennis lover could almost assume that his retirement will be announced sooner rather than later. That doesn’t seem to be the case now: Wawrinka is back in training, he exhibited his still wonderful backhand on Twitter. Highlighted with the hashtags #backsoon and #TrustTheProcess. Wawrinka has been following the latter motto for a long time. The slogan was actually “invented” by the NBA team, the Philadelphia 76ers.

Wawrinka beats Karatsev in Prague

Wawrinka is now 36 years old, last season he was only able to play six matches, the balance was balanced. The last appearance so far was in Doha, where Wawrinka lost to Lloyd Harris in three tight sets. The missing matches are of course reflected in the ATP world rankings, Stan Wawrinka is only listed in position 159.

The tennis community can look forward to how Wawrinka will make his comeback. As early as summer 2020, after the global break due to the corona virus, Wawrinka showed that he was not above starting at ATP Challenger tournaments. This was the case twice two and a half years ago, each time in Prague. By the way, Wawrinka won the first tournament in the final against a certain Aslan Karatsev. He should make it big in early 2021 with the semi-finals of the Australian Open. Stan Wawrinka is also hoping for a run like this one last time.
