The Russian Anna Kalinskaya advanced this Friday to the semifinals of the Zapopan Open by eliminating the fourth favorite, the Colombian Camila Osorio, with partials of 6-4 and 6-1.
Kalinskaya will face with the winner of the series between the American Sloane Stephens and the Australian Daria Saville.
Osorio and Kalinskaya held serve until the eighth game.
The 23-year-old Russian got a break in the ninth game and from there went on to win the first set 6-4.
In the second set, a physical loss was noted in the Colombian, number 45 in the worldcould not control his service, suffered a break in the first game and could not recover.
The Russian, 100th in the world ranking, was precise from the back of the court and made two more breaks that allowed her to win 6-1.
At the end of the match Anna Kalinskaya explained which was the key to overcoming the South American tennis player.
“I came in with a very aggressive mentality and I was very focused to keep my serve. I felt very good, especially on my short shots. It’s great to have the opportunity to play this semi-final in Mexico, it makes me feel very happy,” said the player. Russian at the end of the match.
The Colombian Camila Osorio lamented this Friday the lack in South America of tournaments of the Women’s Association of Tennis (WTA) that helps players to compete and grow in the world ranking.
“We are missing WTA tournaments to grow. You see the ATP and they have up to five tournaments. Only here in Mexico do you find tournaments where you can compete, but in South America it’s difficult,” said Osorio after being eliminated at the Zapopan Open.
The Colombian, fourth favorite of the contestfell in the quarterfinals against Russian Anna Kalinskaya 6-4, 6-1.
The best Latin American on the WTA list, aged 20, is ranked 45. Despite regretting the lack of competition, he praised the improvement shown by the South American tennis players.

The Colombian confessed that despite the defeat she leaves with the desire to return in the next edition of this tournament.
“I would love to come back, I really like Mexico. In the tournament they made me feel very loved, they encouraged me a lot. It was a blessing to have been here and to have reached the quarterfinals,” she concluded.
