The criticism of the Bavarian defense is increasing. The 4-2 defeat against VfL Bochum showed (once again) that Munich’s defense is anything but stable. Above all, Dayot Upamecano and Lucas Hernandez are in the “line of fire”.
While Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann did not want to criticize any individual players after the bankruptcy against Bochum, “Sky” expert Lothar Matthäus does not mince his words in this regard. The 60-year-old is particularly harsh with the French defensive duo Hernandez and Upamecano: “The grace period is long over for both of them. They may do their jobs well in France’s back four. In Munich, however, they have to lead and direct the back team. And so far they have not been able to do that at all,” he emphasized in his column for the pay-TV broadcaster.
Matthew criticizes the lack of leader qualities
According to Matthäus, the two are “far too busy with their own game” and cannot “take on leadership qualities”. Upamecano “makes way too many mistakes” and has a noticeable lack of pace. With Hernandez, you never know if he’s “hitting the ball or hitting the opponent.”
The ex-FCB professional made it clear that the performances of the two Frenchmen are currently disproportionate to their transfer fees and salaries.
