Raiders defeat Cowboys in overtime

(Arlington) – Daniel Carlson had a 29-yard field goal in overtime and the Las Vegas Raiders beat the Dallas Cowboys 36-33 on Thursday night.

Carlson’s fifth field goal came after Anthony Brown was assessed an obstruction penalty on Zay Jones on third down and 18 yards to go.

“Obviously the penalties helped,” Raiders quarterback Derek Carr said.

The Raiders (6-5) snapped a three-game losing streak to claim their first American Thanksgiving victory since 1968. It was their fourth game at the holiday since that triumph and they had suffered two defeats against the Cowboys.

“I won’t lie, it gave me goosebumps. When the ball went between the posts, it brought back memories of when I was a kid,” Carr said.

Carlson gave the Raiders a 33-30 lead with a career-high 56-yard field goal with 1:52 remaining. Greg Zuerlein responded with a 45-yard field goal with 19 seconds left.

Tony Pollard returned a kickoff 100 for a major in the third quarter, but was stopped at the 15 line to start overtime. The Cowboys made three plays and they had to punt.

The Raiders completed the work to allow an AFC West team to claim a third victory in the last four games against the Cowboys (7-4), leaders of the NFA East .

Brown was ahead of Jones when Carr kicked the ball his way in the extra period. The Raiders advanced from their 43 line to the Cowboys’ 24 line. Several penalties were awarded before Carlson could land the final punt.

“It’s that kind of day,” said Brown, who picked up four penalties for obstruction. I feel like I was in a good position during each of them and I tried to turn my head. On some of these sequences, my head was turned. I will try to be better. »

Both teams have set season highs for penalties and yards given. The Cowboys took 14 penalties for 166 yards while the Raiders took 14 for 110 yards.

“Twenty-eight penalties. I don’t really know what to tell you. Write whatever you want,” Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy told reporters.

Carr had 373 passing yards, including 56 on a touchdown pass to DeSean Jackson. Marcus Mariota scored a touchdown after a short run.

The Cowboys offense struggled in the absence of receivers Amari Cooper (COVID-19 protocol) and CeeDee Lamb (concussion).

Dak Prescott had 209 of his 375 passing yards in the fourth quarter. His 32-yard pass to Dalton Schultz along with the successful two-point convert tied the score 30-30 with 2:54 to go.

“We made explosive plays and we gave up explosive plays,” Raiders interim head coach Rich Bisaccia said.

Sean McKeon caught his first career NFL touchdown pass. He grabbed a 10-yard pass from Prescott to give the Cowboys their first points of the game. Injured in the right knee, Ezekiel Elliott was limited to nine carries for gains of 25 yards and a touchdown.

Ahead of the game, the names of Cowboys offensive line coach Joe Philbin and assistant team fitness coach Kendall Smith were placed in NFL COVID-related protocols -19 and they did not participate in the match.

The Cowboys were without an instructor for the second time in three games due to health and safety protocols. Running backs coach Skip Peete missed the Cowboys’ last home game against the Atlanta Falcons.

The Raiders were unable to rely on linebacker coach Richard Smith due to COVID-19 protocols.

The Bills serve a correction to the Saints

(New Orleans) – Josh Allen threw four touchdown passes and 260 yards, guiding the Buffalo Bills to serve a 31-6 correction to the New Orleans Saints on Thursday night.

“Our head coach always talks about being playoff caliber and that’s the kind of team we want to be,” Allen said. We want to be the best version of ourselves, every time we step onto the court. »

Dawson Knox caught two touchdown passes, setting a team record for an insert halfback with seven majors in a season. His second touchdown gave the Bills a 24-0 lead (7-4).

Stefon Diggs grabbed seven passes for 74 yards and a touchdown. Running back Matt Breida turned a short pass into a 23-yard major in the win, which comes just four days after a crushing loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

“To have lost the way we did last weekend can be demoralizing at times,” Bills defensive end Mario Addison said. You have to forget everything and start over. Everyone had a really good mentality going into the game and we were just ready. »

The Saints (5-6), who were without star running back Alvin Kamara for the third straight game, were shut out for three quarters. They finally scored on an 11-yard pass from Trevor Siemian to Nick Vannett.

The New Orleans squad suffered a fourth straight loss and was outscored 361-190 in total yards.

The matchup illustrated how limited the Saints’ offense has become due to injuries to Kamara and star receiver Michael Thomas, who hasn’t played all season.

The Saints were 5-2 when quarterback Jameis Winston started the game. He replaced Drew Brees, who announced his retirement last year. However, Winston injured his knee in the team’s last win on October 31 and will miss the rest of the season.

“Before the game, we felt like we had to be more aggressive because we knew how effective the Bills offense could be,” Saints head coach Sean Payton said. We weren’t going to be able to win against teams like that by scoring 14 or 17 points. »

Siemian completed 17 of 29 passes for 163 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Taysom Hill, who is coming back from a foot injury, was in the lineup but didn’t play.

Most fans left Caesars Superdome early in the fourth quarter, leaving a strong contingent of Bills fans to celebrate their team’s victory.

Bears snap five-game losing streak

(Detroit) – Cairo Santos made a last-second 28-yard field goal and the Chicago Bears defeated the Detroit Lions 16-14 on Thursday.

“It was important this week to believe in each other on the team,” said Santos. Hopefully this can revive us. »

The Bears (4-7) snapped a five-game losing streak amid reports that Matt Nagy could be in danger of losing his job as head coach.

“We’ve had some distractions the last few days,” Nagy said. (This victory), it shows all the character of the guys in this locker room. »

The Lions (0-10-1) made several errors and contested a 15e game in a row without winning.

They haven’t won a game since nearly a year ago in Chicago.

For the Bears, Andy Dalton replaced injured rookie quarterback Justin Fields.

He orchestrated a rush for 69 yards on 18 plays, which took the last eight and a half minutes of the game.

Dalton completed a 13-yard pass to Damiere Byrd on third down and five yards.

This was followed by a five-yard penalty to the Lions, who called time out without a play between the two calls.

On the next play, a third down and four yards, Dalton joined Byrd on seven yards.

Dalton later took the knee to the ground with a second on the clock, paving the way for Santos’ third-and-victory-place finish.

Dalton had 317 passing yards. He completed a 17-yard touchdown pass to Jimmy Graham late in the second quarter.

Jared Goff returned to action after missing a game with an oblique injury.

He had 171 passing yards, two of which led to touchdowns.

One of the paid passes went to Josh Reynolds for 39 yards on the Lions’ first run.

The other was 17 yards to TJ Hockenson late in the third quarter – that gave the Lions a 14-13 lead.

Amani Oruwariye intercepted a pass from Dalton in the end zone late in the second quarter.

The Lions received 10 penalties.

“A second down and 25 yards or a third down and 32 yards, that narrows the play options considerably,” Lions coach Dan Campbell said.

Fields injured his ribs Sunday in a loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

The Bears will host the Arizona Cards on December 5.

As for the Lions, they will host the Minnesota Vikings on the same day.
