For the first continental competition in 2022, the European Cup in Sarajevo (Bosnia-Herzegovina), 24 German judoka started at the weekend to recommend themselves for the upcoming tasks in the IJF series and for championships.

Michel Adam (JSV Speyer, Palatinate) and Martin Matijass (JC 71 Düsseldorf, North Rhine-Westphalia) won all fights and thus gold. “I’m so happy that I’m able to get my performance back after my injuries,” says Matijass contentedly after his competition.

Martin Setz (UJC Potsdam/Brandenburg), Timo Cavelius (PTSV Hof, Bavaria) and Kilian Kappelmeier (TSV Großhadern, Bavaria) won bronze.

Fifth places won:

Rafaella Igl (TSV Abensberg, Bavaria),
Tim Schmidt (UJKC Potsdam, Brandenburg),
Dario Kurbjeweit Garcia (TSV Grosshadern, Bavaria),
Yvo Witassek (UJKC Potsdam, Brandenburg).

In addition, the following athletes will be seventh:

Nadja Bazynski (TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen, North Rhine-Westphalia),
Sarah Mäkelburg (SUA Witten, North Rhine-Westphalia),
Lennart Slamberger (JC Leipzig, Saxony),
Shamil Dzavbatyrov (TSV Grosshadern, Bavaria).

In total, the German athletes won two gold and three silver medals and took four fifth and seventh places respectively. In the nation ranking, Germany is fourth behind France, Turkey and Spain, who also achieved two victories each.
