Veteran Guard José Miguel Urtasun Joins Bàsquet Girona
Experienced Spanish guard José Miguel “Txemi” Urtasun (born April 30, 1984) has signed with Bàsquet Girona for the remainder of the season. This move comes after the departure of Olaf Schaftenaar, bolstering Girona’s roster with Urtasun’s extensive professional experience.
Urtasun, a native of Pamplona, boasts a long and distinguished career in Spanish basketball. He has competed at the highest level in the ACB, Spain’s premier league, for numerous teams. His journey also includes stints in the LEB Or, the second division, where he showcased his skills with Melilla, Ourense, and Alicante over the past three seasons.
urtasun’s international experience is equally remarkable. He has participated in both the Eurocup and the prestigious Euroleague, representing clubs like sevilla, Gran Canaria, and Malaga. Notably, he spent two seasons with Malaga (2012-2014), competing in the Euroleague during that time.
Before joining Girona, Urtasun began the current season with the Panthers of Aguascalientes in the Mexican League. There, he averaged a solid 12.2 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in 23 minutes per game. Since January, he has been contributing to Bàsquet Manresa, another ACB team.

Txemi: Thank you for having me. It’s great to be here and talk about this exciting new chapter in my career.
Moderator: You’ve had an incredible journey, starting in the ACB and playing for esteemed clubs like Sevilla, Gran Canaria, and Malaga. What do you consider the highlight of your career so far?
Txemi: It’s hard to pick just one! Playing in the EuroLeague with Malaga for two seasons was a dream come true. The level of competition was intense, the atmosphere electric. But honestly, every step of this journey has been rewarding in its own way.
moderator: Speaking of journeys, you spent some time honing your skills in the LEB Or, playing for Melilla, Ourense, and Alicante. How important was that experience for your development as a player?
Txemi: Those years in the LEB Or where vital. They allowed me to refine my game, gain more leadership experience, and adapt to different playing styles. It reminded me that the hunger to learn and improve never fades, irrespective of the league.
Moderator: You recently played for the Panthers of Aguascalientes in the Mexican League,averaging solid numbers.What prompted you to return to Spain and specifically join Bàsquet Girona?
Txemi: While I enjoyed my time in Mexico, my heart always belongs to spanish basketball. The prospect to contribute to a competitive team like Girona, especially after Olaf Schaftenaar’s departure, was somthing I couldn’t pass up.

Txemi: I thrive in environments with passionate fans. They add a special energy to the game. I can’t wait to experience that firsthand with Girona’s dedicated supporters.
moderator: Some analysts see your signing as a smart move by Girona, bolstering their roster with your experience and leadership. What are your personal goals for the remainder of the season?
Txemi: My primary goal is to help Girona achieve its goals. Whether that’s reaching the playoffs or making a strong push in the ACB, I want to contribute to the team’s success.
