As the beginning of the large-scale military operation by Russia on February 24, 2022, prominent figures like former football legend Andriy Shevchenko, former world heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko, tennis player Elina Svitolina, and Olympic Greco-Roman wrestling champion Zhan Beleniuk have all publicly expressed their allegiance to Ukraine.

One powerful image that resonated globally was that of footballer Roman Yaremchuk. During a Champions League match between Benfica Lisbon and Ajax Amsterdam on February 23,2022,Yaremchuk scored a crucial equalizer and revealed a t-shirt bearing the Ukrainian trident,a potent national symbol,beneath his jersey.

Tennis star Elina Svitolina, married to French athlete Gaël Monfils, has been a vocal advocate for Ukraine on social media, using the hashtag #StandWithUkraine to amplify her message. In a recent post, she declared, “I am incredibly proud to be Ukrainian. In this incredibly challenging time, we stand united for peace and the future of our nation. Glory to Ukraine.”

Echoing Svitolina’s sentiments, Shevchenko emphasized the resilience of the Ukrainian people. “Throughout the past three decades, we have faced numerous hardships and forged ourselves into a nation,” he stated on Instagram. “We are a nation of sincere, hardworking, and freedom-loving individuals. this is our greatest strength. While these are difficult times, we must remain united.”

Olympic wrestling champion Zhan Beleniuk, whose mother hails from Rwanda, urged calm amidst the turmoil.”It’s crucial to understand that panic is a weapon being used against us,” he asserted, highlighting his role as a deputy. “The situation is undoubtedly difficult, but it is under control thanks to our authorities and military. We have faith in our country! We have faith in our armed forces!”

Wladimir Klitschko, whose brother Vitaly serves as the mayor of Kyiv, took a broader viewpoint, condemning the aggression as a threat not only to Ukraine but to the entire world. “The world is witnessing the brutality and recklessness of imperialism, not just against Ukraine, but against humanity as a whole,” he declared. “Let history serve as a lesson to prevent such atrocities from recurring.”

Zhan beleniuk: Thank you for having me. It’s crucial for me to use my platform to speak out against this senseless aggression and show my solidarity with the Ukrainian people.

moderator: You’ve been outspoken on social media, urging calm and emphasizing the resilience of the Ukrainian people. What message do you hope to convey to the world, and specifically to those who might be feeling hopeless or scared?

Zhan Beleniuk: My message is simple: We will not be broken. Ukrainians are strong,resourceful people. We have faced hardships before, and we will overcome this too. It’s crucial to remember that panic is not our ally. We need to stay united, trust our leaders, and have faith in our armed forces.

Moderator: It’s inspiring to see the courage and determination of your fellow Ukrainians, like former footballer Roman Yaremchuk, who proudly displayed the Ukrainian trident after scoring a crucial goal in the Champions League. How does seeing these acts of defiance and solidarity make you feel?

Zhan Beleniuk: It fills me with immense pride. Roman’s actions, and those of countless others, demonstrate the unwavering spirit of the Ukrainian people. We are not just fighting for our lives and our homes, we are fighting for our identity and our right to exist as a free and sovereign nation.

Moderator: You mentioned your faith in the Ukrainian military. As a deputy, you have a unique outlook on the situation. What’s your assessment of the situation, and what message do you have for the international community?

Zhan Beleniuk: The situation is indeed grave, but our military is bravely defending our country. We are grateful for the support we’ve received from the international community, but we need more. We need stronger sanctions against Russia, more military aid, and continued condemnation of this unjustified aggression. The world cannot stand by and watch as a sovereign nation is invaded.

Moderator: You’re absolutely right. The world is watching, and the reactions have been diverse. Some have called for stronger military intervention, while others advocate for diplomatic solutions. What are your thoughts on the best way forward?

Zhan Beleniuk: Peaceful resolution is always the ideal outcome, but right now, it truly seems Russia is not interested in diplomacy. We need a unified front from the international community, applying maximum pressure on Russia to cease hostilities and withdraw its forces from ukraine.
