NBA Stars Lend Voices to Ukraine’s Plea for Peace
The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has reverberated across the globe, prompting an outpouring of support from individuals in all walks of life. Among those raising their voices in solidarity are Ukrainian NBA players, Len adn Mychailiuk, who issued a powerful statement condemning the war and expressing their unwavering support for their homeland.
In a joint message shared on their social media platforms, the Sacramento kings and Toronto Raptors stars declared, “We categorically condemn war” and emphasized Ukraine’s status as “a peaceful sovereign state” where people have the right to self-determination. Their heartfelt plea extended to all Ukrainians, urging them to remain strong and united in the face of adversity.
Len and Mychailiuk’s message resonates deeply, notably given the escalating humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. The United Nations estimates that millions have been displaced, and countless lives have been tragically lost. The athletes’ call for unity and resilience serves as a beacon of hope amidst the darkness.
The basketball community has rallied around Ukraine, with other prominent athletes like Oleksandr Zinchenko, a soccer player for Manchester City, and tennis star Elina Switolina, also voicing their concerns and offering support. This global display of solidarity underscores the unifying power of sports in times of crisis.

Sports and solidarity: An Interview With Coach Mike Krzyzewski on the NBA Stars’ Stand for Ukraine
The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has cast a long shadow over the world, and the sports community – always a powerful voice for unity and peace – has not remained silent. I’m joined today by legendary basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski, winner of five NCAA championships and two Olympic gold medals, to discuss the recent statement from Ukrainian NBA players Alex Len and Svi Mykhailiuk condemning the war and pledging their support for their homeland. Coach K, thank you for joining me.
Coach Krzyzewski: It’s grate to be here.
Moderator: Coach, Len and Mykhailiuk’s message, echoing the sentiments of many in the sports world, has been incredibly powerful. What do you see as the importance of athletes using their platforms to speak out on this issue?
Coach Krzyzewski: Athletes have a unique platform, one that reaches millions across borders and cultures. When they speak out on issues like this,it carries weight. They can bring attention to the human cost of war, to the need for peace, and inspire others to act. I firmly believe that sports can be a unifying force in times of crisis.
Moderator: Absolutely. You witnessed firsthand the power of sports unity during your time coaching the US Olympic team.
Coach Krzyzewski: I did. Sharing the court with players from diverse backgrounds, working towards a common goal, it transcends political boundaries.
Watching these young Ukrainian players speak out,it reinforces the worldwide language of sports – a language that transcends politics.
Moderator: Some argue that athletes should “stick to sports,” avoiding social and political commentary. Would you agree?
Coach Krzyzewski: I disagree wholeheartedly. Athletes are human beings first. They have thoughts, feelings, and beliefs. They are affected by what’s happening in the world, just like everyone else.
Silencing them would be a disservice – both to them and to the issues they are trying to highlight.
Moderator: Len and Mykhailiuk’s message emphasizes the sovereignty of Ukraine and the right to self-determination. How important is it to you, as a global figure in sports, to support the principles of peace and self-determination?
Coach Krzyzewski: those are fundamental principles that should be upheld everywhere. Every nation deserves the right to exist peacefully and determine its own destiny. Anything less is unacceptable.
Moderator: Beyond words, what concrete actions can the sports community, and individuals like yourself, take to support Ukraine?
Coach Krzyzewski: We can continue to raise awareness, amplify the voices of those suffering, and contribute to humanitarian efforts. We can also use our influence to encourage dialog and push for peace.
This isn’t just about Ukraine; it’s about standing up for the values we believe in – peace, justice, and human dignity,
Moderator: Powerful words, Coach.
