After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, tennis pro Sergiy Stakhovsky wants to fight for his country. He joins the military.
The 36-year-old tennis professional is currently number 240 in the world rankings. To fight for his country, Stakhovsky returns to his homeland. The tennis pro announced this in a “Sky” interview.
“Of course I would fight”
“I signed up for the military reserve. I have no military experience, but I have experience with a weapon in the private sector,” said the tennis player. He will take his wife and children to safety in Hungary and then travel to Ukraine. “Of course I would fight, that’s the only reason I’m going back,” said the tennis pro.
Afterwards, the 36-year-old explained his motives: “None of the European leaders or the world is ready to help, is ready to lead the fight in Ukraine for a maybe better Europe in the future.”
Stakhovsky was number 31 in the world tennis rankings in 2010, and in 2013 the Ukrainian celebrated his greatest success, beating Roger Federer in his living room, Wimbledon’s Center Court.
