A group of favorites colored the last 50 km in a hilly course. Jonas Vingegaard and Juan Ayuso used the Côte des Roberts as a springboard towards their first win of the season.
The trio of Frenchmen Julian Alaphilippe, Benoît Cosnefroy and Guillaume Martin did not just let that happen. The trio turned around well, but the Dane from Jumbo-Visma didn’t keep the pedals still at the front either.
With the last – still steadily increasing – kilometer in sight, it was clear that De Fransmen were driving for a podium place. Vingegaard took off with a fierce sprint, to which Spaniard Ajuso had no answer.
In the background, the world champion had to deal with cramps after a long chase. Martin and Cosnefroy pulled out all the stops and blasted past Ayuso.
The French were still in the wake of Vingegaard, but he was already busy with his victory gesture for his first victory this season.
