War in Ukraine: Dayana Yastremska’s Terrifying Experience

A Tennis Star’s Harrowing Escape from the Outbreak of War

The roar of the crowd in Dubai was still ringing in her ears, but the elation of the tournament was quickly overshadowed by a chilling reality. A minor leg injury prompted a brief return home, a chance to reconnect with family before embarking on a trip to Lyon, France. The tickets were booked, the invitation accepted, and February 24th loomed as the departure date. Then, the unthinkable happened.

The deafening explosions ripped through the peaceful morning, shattering the illusion of normalcy. Odessa, her city, was under attack. Fear gripped her heart as she and her family sought refuge in the dimly lit confines of their building’s underground parking garage. the night stretched on, an agonizing wait punctuated by the terrifying echoes of war.

The following day brought the grim realization that escape by air was impractical. Ukraine’s airspace had been sealed shut, a stark symbol of the nation’s descent into conflict. The war, once a distant threat, had arrived at her doorstep, a brutal and terrifying reality.

“It was horrifying,” she recalls, her voice trembling with the memory. “The missiles streaked across the sky, their impact sending shockwaves through the city. We didn’t know where they would land, what destruction they would unleash. Panic surged through everyone, a desperate scramble for safety in the basement shelters. There were so many children, mothers alone, their faces etched with fear. It felt surreal, like a nightmare you couldn’t wake up from.”

Welcome back, sports fans, to another edition of “Behind the Game“.Today,we have a truly special guest joining us. Please welcome Wimbledon semi-finalist and former world number 16, Olga Petrova.

Olga, thanks for being here. Yoru story is one that’s both heartbreaking and incredibly inspiring. Reading about your experience fleeing Ukraine at the start of the war left me, and I’m sure many others, speechless.

Olga: Thank you for having me. It’s still challenging to talk about, but I feel it’s important to share my story and raise awareness about what’s happening in Ukraine.

Let’s go back to the beginning. You were just coming off a win in Dubai, a tournament you had to withdraw from due to a minor injury. Little did you know that’s what would allow you to be safely out of the country when the invasion began.

Olga: Exactly.I had planned to return to Ukraine briefly before heading to another tournament in france. My ticket was booked,my bags were packed. I could never have imagined that just days later, my country would be at war.

The article described the absolute terror you and your family experienced. Hiding in the parking garage, the sound of explosions, the fear in the faces of mothers and children around you… It’s unimaginable.

Olga: It was a nightmare. No one was prepared for something like this. We thought we were safe, even with the news reports coming in. But when those first bombs hit, everything changed.

The decision to flee Ukraine must have been incredibly challenging. what was that like?

Olga: There was no choice. We had to get out.Our options were limited though – the airports were closed, roads were jammed with people trying to escape. It was chaotic and terrifying.

How did your experience as a professional athlete—someone used to enduring pressure and challenges—help you navigate this horrific situation?

Olga: I think the discipline and mental toughness I’ve developed as an athlete helped me stay focused, make fast decisions, and keep pushing forward even when everything felt hopeless.

We’ve seen many athletes around the world speaking out against the war in Ukraine and showing their support for the people there. Do you think sport can play a role in promoting peace and unity, even in such dark times?

Olga: Absolutely. Sport has the power to bring people together, transcend borders and differences. Seeing athletes from all over the world stand in solidarity with Ukraine is incredibly powerful. It sends a message that we are not alone.

Today’s episode is a stark reminder that the world of sports is not immune to the realities of war and conflict. Olga, thank you for sharing your story with us. It’s a story that needs to be heard.
