Doing it several times a year, like most of the riders who are dedicated to snowboarding, supposes a huge outlay, especially for those who, like Queralt Castellet, practice a modality like halfpipe that needs a special track to be able to train. This condition means that the income to dedicate oneself professionally to this sport has to be very high and that, despite the success, one lives almost daily.
In 2019, the Spanish raised her voice to ask for help. She was still one of the world leaders in snowboarding, but did not have the financial support necessary to continue with his
carrera. Either she found new sponsors or she would have to rethink his career. SOS picked him up Alberto MohedanoCEO of the Spanish company Carttec, who did not hesitate to offer him the help that Castellet was looking for. Since then, the wheels of the supermarket and airport carts designed and manufactured by this company based in Alcobendasbecame the main support for Castellet, who proudly wears his logo on the board with which he competes in each event.
Carttec and Red Bull are his main sponsors, whom he recently joined Iberdrola. It also has the help of Star MotoMercedes dealership in his native Sabadell, and with the boards brand Play, which provides him with the material to carry out his tricks on the track. A team that is completed with the help of the Federation and the ADO scholarship, which from now on will be one of the highest in the program. For the silver medal, Queralt will receive 48,000 euros and will keep his scholarship regardless of the results until 2024.
A halfpipe rider’s season barely lasts four months. It runs between December and March, with a World Cup circuit that includes four or five events, to which are added some big tournaments such as the X Games o el Burton US Open. Appointments, all of them, located in exclusive ski resorts where a night’s accommodation can cost 1,000 euros without mentioning an exclusive place.
Winning one of the most prestigious tests means around 20,000 euros for a rider, whose average income is 60,000 euros in prizes. A figure that does not allow waste when it comes to having a large team that in the case of Queralt it is reduced to his coach, his trusted physiotherapist, his board technician and his press officer.
The months that there is no competition, Castellet travels the world to train, which means that he only visits Spain for about two months a year. Another toll to pay, sentimental in this case, to make a living from snowboarding.
