The step was too high for Jil Teichmann (WTA 41) in Doha. The left-hander lost 6-2 6-1 to Aryna Sabalenka (WTA 2) in the round of 16 of the WTA 1000 tournament in the Qatari capital.
Jil Teichmann resisted the strike force of Belarus at the start of the match, even signing the break to pick up at 2-2. But the Seelandaise then let go by conceding six games in a row.
Aryna Sabalenka was even intractable on her commitment after her “hiccup” in the fourth game. The Belarusian has thus lost only four points in her last five service games, in a match completed in just over an hour.
A positive balance sheet
Jil Teichmann can draw a positive balance from his tour in the Gulf despite this heavy defeat. Quarter-finalist in Dubai, she won seven matches in two weeks – including three in qualifying in the United Arab Emirates, when she had won only one in her first three tournaments of the year.
