Bidding for a new venue for the Men’s World Championships begins… Men’s VNL played in Tunisia instead of Russia
(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Hanam-jik = The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) has begun specific work to ‘exclude Russia’.
FIVB announced on the 8th (Korean time), “Today, we have started bidding to select a new venue for the 2022 Men’s World Volleyball Championships. Countries wishing to host must submit an application by March 14.”
The 2022 Men’s World Championships were scheduled to be held in 10 Russian cities, including Moscow, from August 26 to September 11.
However, when Russia invaded Ukraine and the international volleyball community called for ‘Russia to be expelled’, FIVB stripped Russia of its hosting rights.
FIVB said, “In the Men’s World Championship, 24 countries will participate in a total of 52 matches including group qualifiers and tournaments. Up to two regions, semi-finals and finals will be held in the same region.”
In another national competition, the Volleyball Nations League (VNL), Russia was expelled.
World of Volley, which delivers news about volleyball around the world, announced on the 8th that “Tunisia will compete in the men’s VNL instead of Russia.”
The team that will play on behalf of Russia in the women’s VNL has not yet been revealed.
However, FIVB marked as ‘undecided’ the teams and venues of matches that Russia was scheduled to participate in or host in the men’s and women’s VNL schedules.
The ‘3rd week match location’ of the Korean women’s volleyball team participating in VNL is also undecided.
The Korean women’s team will play the first week (May 31 – June 5 local time) in Shreveport, Louisiana, USA, and play the second week (June 14 – 19) in Brasilia, Brazil.
The match was scheduled to be played in the third week (June 28 to July 3) in Ufa, Russia, but a change of venue became inevitable.
