NBA Academy Africa Stars Get Their Shot at BAL Glory
Twelve rising basketball stars from the NBA Academy Africa will have the chance to showcase their skills on the biggest stage in African basketball. The Basketball Africa League (BAL) recently announced the launch of the “BAL Elevate” program, a groundbreaking initiative that will see these talented young athletes join BAL teams for the 2022 season.
This exciting program, starting March 5th, 2022, offers a unique prospect for these promising players to gain invaluable experience competing against seasoned professionals.
“The BAL Elevate program is a game-changer for both the BAL teams and the young men from the NBA Academy Africa,” stated Amadou Gallo Fall, President of the BAL. “It provides a platform for these talented athletes to develop their skills at the professional level, alongside some of the best players on the continent.”
The selection process for the BAL Elevate program was conducted on March 2nd by the presidents of the 12 BAL teams. Players from the same country as a BAL team were automatically assigned to that team. In cases where multiple players from the same country were selected, the team chose one player, while the others entered a pool for selection by other teams.
To maintain their amateur status, players in the BAL Elevate program will not be eligible to share in any monetary prizes awarded to top BAL teams.
The 12 BAL teams, including defending champions Zamalek (Egypt), are divided into two conferences: the Sahara Conference and the Nile Conference. Each conference will play a 15-game group stage, with the top four teams from each conference advancing to the BAL playoffs. The playoffs will culminate in a knockout tournament and finals at the Kigali Arena from May 21st to 28th.
The season opener will see Senegal’s Dakar University Club (DUC) face off against Guinea’s Seydou Legacy Athlétique Club (SLAC) on March 5th. This thrilling matchup is just the begining of 38 exciting games that will be played across three cities over the next three months.
The NBA Academy Africa, established in 2017, has been instrumental in nurturing basketball talent across the continent. Located in Saly, Senegal, the academy provides a world-class training environment with state-of-the-art facilities, including two indoor basketball courts, a multipurpose activity center, a weight room, conference rooms, dormitories, and educational facilities.
