Borussia Dortmund’s U19s are in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Youth League. Coach Mike Tullberg’s team defeated the Under-19s Manchester United 3-1 on penalties. After 90 minutes it was 2:2 (1:1).
Only for the second time since the Youth League was introduced did BVB qualify for the Round of 16. Opponents Manchester United, equipped with a number of internationals and players with professional experience, went into the game as favourites. In addition, BVB lost the yellow carded top scorer Bradley Fink and the injured midfielder Abdoulaye Kamara.
Youssoufa Moukoko was registered for the Youth League, but stayed with coach Marco Rose.
The hosts around the Tunisian international Hannibal Mejbri also set the tone for other stretches of the game. But Dortmund initially took the lead with a goal from Jamie Bynoe-Gittens (16′). Just a few minutes later, United equalized through Charlie McNeill (23′).
After that, United set the pace. Striker Garnacho hit the net twice but was called off for offside. Out of nowhere Bynoe-Gittens (68th) scored the lead for Dortmund again. Rhys Bennett brought the hosts back into play just before the end.
In the penalty shoot-out that followed, Dortmund goalkeeper Silas Ostrzinski became the hero with two saved penalties.
In the parallel game, Paris-Saint Germain defeated FC Sevilla 2-0.

UEFA Youth League: Manchester United vs. BVB 2: 2 (1: 3 iE) – live ticker to read
Conclusion | What a huge success for the young Dortmunders! Silas Ostrzinski becomes a penalty shootout hero, Jamie Bynoe-Gittens scores two goals in the game, then converts the final penalty to victory. Dortmund was the only German team in the round of 16 and is now in the quarterfinals and can continue to dream of the title.
120. | gooool! Bynoe-Gittens makes the decisive 3:1 on penalties and shoots BVB into the quarter-finals of the Youth League!
120. | Hotshot, Ostrzinski! The Dortmund goalkeeper saves Emeran’s shot!
120. | Finally a hit! Rothe loads Vitek. 2:1 for Dortmund!
120. | Now comes Hannibal… but he misses too. Very weak shot. Ostrzinski is down and catches the ball. 1:1!
120. | Now El-Zein for Dortmund: Very weak attempt with the right in the lower right corner. Vitek holds! Still 1:1!
120. | McNeill thunders the ball against the post with full instep. Still 1:1!
120. | Coulibaly takes a long run, slips away, touches the ball twice and therefore the goal is disallowed. Continue 1:1!
120. | Now comes Jurado: Bottom right, very safe penalty. 1:1!
120. | Gürpüz is BVB’s first shooter: the playmaker loads Vitek. Shot bottom left, inside. 0:1!
Conclusion | 90 minutes of power football. The second half actually belonged entirely to the hosts, but Bynoe-Gittens wanted it differently and gave BVB the lead. A carelessness on the part of Collins got United the equalizer. Now the winner will be determined in a penalty shootout.
90.+4 | Final whistle! There’s penalty shootouts!
90.+3 | Huge dope for BVB: Bamba fouls McNeill in the penalty area. It’s a clear penalty, but there’s no whistle.
90. | Three minutes of stoppage time!
89. | Goalscorer Bennett sees the yellow card because he prevents Ostrzinski from teeing off.
86. | Jurado crosses into the penalty area from the right, Collins goes too half-heartedly and so Bennett has all the time in the world and makes it 2-2 from close range.
85. | Gooooo! Compensation! Bennett makes it 2-2!
83. | Double change at Manchester United: Shoretire goes down, Emeran is in. Iqbal goes down, Hansen-Aaroen is there.
81. | Bamba is standing again. Lütke-Frie’s corner lands on goalkeeper Vitek.
80. | Bamba is injured in the penalty area after Hannibal was deployed, Dortmund demands a penalty. There’s no whistle, but Bamba needs treatment.
78. | Huge chance for Manchester United! Garnacho is completely free in the penalty area after a Savage assist, but Garnacho puts the ball wide to the left of the goal. Incomprehensible.
69. | What’s going on here?! Dortmund takes the lead out of nowhere and again it’s Bynoe-Gittens who grabs the ball on the left, rushes into the penalty area at massive speed, sees no passing stations there and thunders the thing into the far corner. There was some luck involved, but who cares?
68. | gooooool! Dortmund leads 2-1! Scorer: Bynoe-Gittens
68. | Dortmund now has the ball a little more, lets the ball run in its own ranks to provide relief and new organization.
65. | As a reminder, if there is no winner after 90 minutes, there is an immediate penalty shootout.
62. | Change at BVB: striker El-Zein for striker Rijkhoff. The latter had a good scene, otherwise he was unsubscribed.
60. | United captain Hannibal Mejbri, who is actually just called Hannibal, is a real eye-catcher. Extremely sure of the ball, great overview, sets the pace. It’s no wonder that by the time he was 19, he had already won eleven caps for Tunisia. For example at the Africa Cup.
57. | Yellow card for McNeill after a foul on Dortmund goalkeeper Ostrzinski.
55. | Mejbri with a sugar pass for Garnacho, who flicked the ball in the penalty area with a right corner, but he was offside. The referee saw it and didn’t give the goal.
53. | The hosts pick up the pace again. Fernandez, Garnacho and Shoretire are everywhere and very safe on the ball. Dortmund have problems getting this trio under control.
50. | Mejbri on the other side after a Fernandez pass in the penalty area, good shot from the left but over it.
49. | Huge chance for Dortmund! The new man, Bamba, puts through for Semic, who had moved into the penalty area. Clear shot, but Semic aims a meter over the goal.
46. | Double change at BVB: Bamba for Kleine-Bekel and Cisse for Walz.
46. | Let’s continue in Manchester.
UEFA Youth League: Manchester United vs. BVB in the live ticker today – start of the 2nd half!
half time: Dortmund started well, deservedly took the lead, but then Manchester United showed their class, not only equalized but took over the whole game. Garnacho is an asset, Shoretire and Fernadez are also dangerous. BVB has to improve in round two, otherwise it will be dangerous.
UEFA Youth League: Manchester United vs. BVB in the live ticker today – break!
45. | Halftime in Manchester!
44. | The ball wriggles in the Dortmund net, but offside. Garnacho met.
41. | Shoretire puts Garnacho in the box but Ostrzinski is there. First run-in for the people in front who are a bit sleepy again.
38. | You don’t always have to combine. Garnacho just held on with his right foot from around 30 meters. Good shot, but no problem for Ostrzinski.
36. | Rijkhoff refuels in the penalty area but is all alone and then falls in the penalty area surrounded by four United players. No penalty. Correct decision by referee Kaspar Sjöberg from Sweden.
33. | The pace is a bit out now, the 1:1 after half an hour is okay. Dortmund is looking for a counterattack, but Manchester United seems a little more physically present.
28. | Walz (Dortmund) received a yellow card after a foul on Mejbri.
27. | Almost the lead for United! Fernandez dances again on the left, the ball in the middle for Shoretire, who can still arrange the ball calmly, but then shoots the ball over the goal from six yards.
24. | Dortmund didn’t defend that well: Fernandez is free on the left corner of the penalty area, sticks through to McNeill, who paralyzes the Dortmund defense with one or two movements and shoots into the far corner.
23. | gooool! 1:1! Scorer: McNeill
20. | This Lion Semic is a real weapon for BVB: the right-back is always on the move at a tremendous pace.
17. | Great counterattack by BVB after a United corner over three stops. Semic is brutally fast in the centre, lays to the left for Bynoe-Gittens, who tanks into the penalty area and puts the ball past Vitek.
16. | gooooool! 1:0 for Dortmund! Scorer: Bynoe-Gittens
12. | Lütke-Frie with the corner from the right. Collins lurks at the first post again, but Jurado clears. The corner that follows comes in sharply, but the referee whistles for an offensive foul while the ball is in the air.
8. | Dortmund sets the tone here in the early stages. Mike Tullberg’s boys have more of the game.
3. | The first chance for BVB! After a great free-kick cross from the right-hand field, Collins, who has moved up, is there with his head at the near post, but Vitek clears the follow-up.
2. | The first corner kick for the hosts after only twelve seconds, but no danger.
1. | The whistle has just sounded, United toast!
