Eight Canadian athletes earned their ticket to Japan based on their performances throughout the qualifying period which officially ended on June 15th.
Rachel Honderich, Jason Ho-Shue, Joshua Hurlburt-Yu, Michelle Li, Kristen Tsai, Josephine Wu, Nyl Yakura and Brian Yang will represent the maple leaf from July 24 to August 2 at the Musashino Forest Sports Center.
With representatives in each of the events on the program, Canada will be among the nine countries in action in all the tables in Tokyo.
This wave of badminton success for Canadians has been brewing for a few years now. In 2015, the country won six medals at the Pan American Games in Toronto (one gold, three silver and two bronze) and qualified two athletes for the Rio Olympics in 2016.
Then, at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, the Canadians won four gold, three silver and one bronze.
Canada will be looking for its first medal there since the advent of badminton at the Games in 1992. It recorded its best result with a 4th place finish in women’s doubles by Alexandra Bruce and Michelle Li, at the London Games in 2012.
