conquering Sri Lanka: A Third Raid Amazones for Lydie Alglave
Lydie Alglave, a 59-year-old resident of Prunières, is gearing up for her third Raid Amazones adventure. This time, the challenging expedition takes her to Sri Lanka, following previous journeys to Cambodia and Vietnam.
Reflecting on her first Raid Amazones experience, Alglave describes it as a journey of self-discovery. “The initial raid is about finding your footing,” she explains. “There are many participants, and it takes time to understand your strengths, your training level, and how to navigate the competition. The primary goal is to complete the race injury-free.”
Despite meticulous readiness, Alglave emphasizes the importance of adapting to the demanding climate, with temperatures soaring between 30 and 40 degrees Celsius.
Participating in this exclusively female adventure requires significant commitment. The registration fee alone is a hefty 4,000 euros, and finding a compatible teammate is crucial. Alglave notes that this can be a challenge, stating, “It’s ideal to have a family member or friend join you. However, sometimes, like in my case, finding someone willing to commit to both the financial aspect and the time commitment can be arduous.”
Fortunately, Alglave connected with her teammate through the Raid Amazones website. Her partner, hailing from Perpignan, will be embarking on her first raid. The COVID-19 pandemic unfortunately prevented them from meeting beforehand.
A Celebration of Strength and Solidarity
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Raid Amazones, attracting over 400 adventurers to the island nation of Sri Lanka. Teams of two or three will compete over six days, tackling a diverse range of disciplines, including mountain biking, canoeing, trail running, archery, and surprise challenges. The immersive experience pushes participants to their limits, demanding both physical and mental fortitude.
Afternoons offer a welcome respite from the intense competition, allowing the Amazons to engage with local communities and experience the rich culture of Sri Lanka.
Beyond the thrill of the race, the Raid Amazones is also a platform for supporting worthy causes. Participants choose a charity or association to champion, raising awareness and funds throughout their journey. Alglave has chosen to support the Telethon, a French charity dedicated to funding research for genetic diseases.
alglave won’t be the only representative from the Hautes-Alpes region. Patricia Chauvet, a resident of Briançon, is also set to take on the challenge.
