The city of acqui terme is extending a helping hand to three Ukrainian badminton players – two athletes and their coach – who found themselves stranded and without resources after a tournament in Uganda. The ongoing war in Ukraine has left them in a precarious situation, unable to return home.

Mayor Lorenzo Lucchini, alerted to their plight by a local sportsman, swiftly took action to ensure their safety. Recognizing the urgency, he reached out to Acqui Terme’s hoteliers, requesting their assistance in providing temporary accommodation for the group.

“I contacted the local hotels to see if they would be willing to host these individuals for as long as needed,” Lucchini explained.

The municipality, in collaboration with a local foundation, is committed to providing the necessary financial support to cover the players’ expenses during their stay. One Acquese hotel has already stepped forward, offering to welcome the Ukrainian citizens.

While the badminton players are currently considering returning to Ukraine to join the fight,Lucchini expressed his hope that they will choose to seek refuge in Acqui Terme. “We sincerely hope they will come to Acqui and remain here, safe from harm,” he stated.

In a message to the Acqui Terme community, Lucchini urged residents to extend their support and solidarity to these individuals should they arrive. “If and when these unfortunate friends decide to come to Acqui Terme, let us offer them all the help they need,” he appealed.
