Anabel Medina: “Never before has there been a tournament of this category of women’s tennis in Valencia”

The BBVA International Open Valencia presented this Thursday its 2022 edition in which it will be WTA 125

BARCELONA, 31 MAR. 2022 (Europa Press) –

The BBVA Open Internacional Valencia Tournament presented its 2022 edition this Thursday, which will be held in the Turia capital from June 4 to 12 and will already be part of the WTA professional calendar after raising its prize category to $125,000.

In the official presentation of the event, the former tennis player and tournament director, Anabel Medina, celebrated the importance of “only” 75 cities around the world holding a WTA tournament, but also the fact that the role of women “becomes in value” with the evidence of having been able to “take steps faster than expected”.

“There had never before been a tournament of these categories of women’s tennis in Valencia. It is history for Valencian tennis and for Valencia”, stressed the captain of the Spanish Billie Jean King Cup team, while Joaquín Ríos, from the promoter company ‘Tennium ‘, believes that this tournament “puts them on the map of women’s world tennis”.

After the 2021 edition, more than 90 percent of the Sporting Club de Tenis members expressed their intention to “continue enjoying an event of these characteristics,” said the president of the Valencian club, Miguel Selvi.

For this reason, the president of the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation, Miguel Díaz, recalled that “these opportunities” offer Spanish players the power to “fight for points and play at home, with all the benefits that this entails.”

This new synergy, together with the support of BBVA as the main sponsor, certifies the intention already presented in the 2021 edition of becoming a WTA tournament and being able to bring together some of the best players on the international circuit in the Turia capital.

“From minute zero I knew that this project would transcend the merely sporting and its trajectory proves it. Without going any further, last year it became the first tournament to offset the carbon footprint”, explained David Conde, Eastern Territorial Director of BBVA.

The director also showed his pride with the project that has given opportunities to players whom they have seen “grow and consolidate”, for which he has made “Valencia a benchmark in women’s tennis” and that, without a doubt, has “a promising future,” he concluded.
