Refaelov’s Brilliance ignites Anderlecht’s Comeback: A Conversation with Former Anderlecht Striker, Jan Koller
Welcome back, fans, to another exciting edition of Inside the Pitch! Today, we have a very special guest, none other than former Anderlecht legend, Jan Koller! Welcome, Jan.
Jan Koller: It’s great to be here. It’s always a pleasure to discuss Anderlecht, a club that holds a special place in my heart.
I know you closely followed the recent match against Ostend, a game that saw Anderlecht emerge victorious after a somewhat shaky start. What were your initial thoughts watching the first half unfold?
Jan Koller: Honestly, I was a bit concerned. Anderlecht looked off the pace, lacking their usual creative spark. Ostend deserve credit for their resilience, they defended resolutely and made it challenging for Anderlecht to find space. Kouamé, who usually excels at creating chances, looked frustrated their lack of service.
It certainly wasn’t the vintage Anderlecht performance we are accustomed to seeing. What do you attribute this to? fatigue? Taking their opponents lightly?
Jan koller: I think a combination of factors might be at play. Anderlecht have had a demanding schedule lately. Winning takes its toll, both physically and mentally. Maybe subconsciously, they expected an easier ride against Ostend.
but the second half saw a complete transformation! Refaelov’s goal seemed to be the turning point. Your thoughts on his performance?
Jan Koller: Refaelov is a class act, a true game-changer. That goal was pure brilliance – a clinical finish after a beautifully constructed move with Zirkzee. It injected much-needed urgency into anderlecht’s play, and you could almost feel the momentum shift.
Indeed, it seemed to ignite the team. What impressed you the most about Anderlecht’s performance in the second half?
Jan Koller: The hunger. Once they went ahead, Anderlecht started pressing higher, winning the ball back quicker and creating more opportunities. Verschaeren’s goal showcased their clinical finishing, and the combination play between Amuzu and Raman for the third goal was truly delightful.
It was a convincing victory but do you think Anderlecht can maintain this winning form going forward?
Jan Koller: It’s a long season, and there will be ups and downs. Ghent are breathing down their necks,so Anderlecht cannot afford to rest on their laurels. Consistency is key.they need to find that work ethic and that hunger in every match, not just when they’re chasing a goal.
