A Conversation with elina Svitolina: Serving Up Hope for Children in Ukraine
Elina Svitolina, the fierce Ukrainian tennis star known for her powerful serves adn unwavering determination, is tackling an opponent far tougher than any on the court: the ongoing war in her homeland.
Today, we’re not discussing aces or backhands, but the urgency of Elina’s work as a UNICEF ambassador, tirelessly advocating for the educational rights of Ukrainian children displaced by the conflict.
Elina, thank you for joining me today. The situation in Ukraine has undoubtedly been devastating. can you tell us why you feel so passionately about ensuring these children continue their education amidst such turmoil?
Elina: My country is hurting, and it’s heartbreaking to see the impact this war has had on so many innocent lives, especially children. Education is a basic right, a lifeline for their future. being robbed of that during such a traumatic time is simply unacceptable.
You’ve been a UNICEF ambassador since 2016, Elina.How has your focus shifted since the war began?
Elina: Before, much of my work revolved around promoting access to quality education in general. Now, the focus is on emergency response. we’re talking about providing safe learning spaces, essential supplies, and psychological support to children who have lost their homes, their schools, even loved ones.
Over two million refugees have fled Ukraine. The numbers are staggering. What does UNICEF’s response look like on the ground?
elina: UNICEF is working around the clock,establishing “Blue Dot” centers along escape routes to offer a safe haven for children and families. inside these centers, they can access psychosocial support, educational activities, and basic necessities. We’re also working to rebuild damaged schools and train teachers on how to best support children dealing with trauma.
But funding is crucial, isn’t it?
Elina: Absolutely.Every dollar donated goes directly towards providing lifelines for these children. Whether it’s rebuilding a classroom,supplying textbooks,or providing psychological counseling,the need is immense.
Many people see sports as a powerful tool for bringing unity and hope during times of crisis. Do you see a role for the global sports community in supporting your efforts?
Elina: Absolutely! The global sports community has a platform that can reach millions. By raising awareness, encouraging donations, and even organizing events to support relief efforts, athletes, teams, and fans can make a real difference.
