Is MLB streaming the Future? A Conversation with Hall of famer, David Ortiz

Major League Baseball is stepping up to the plate with a bold decision to embrace streaming, partnering with tech giants like Apple TV+ and Peacock. This move, coming right after the league resolved its lockout, suggests a new era for how fans experience America’s pastime.

To unpack these changes and what they mean for the future of baseball, I sat down with three-time World Series champion and baseball legend, David Ortiz.

Moderator: David, thanks for joining me.Baseball streaming is a hot topic right now. What are your initial thoughts on MLB partnering with Apple TV+ and Peacock for exclusive game coverage?

David Ortiz: It’s definitely a game-changer, man. You see how everything’s going digital these days, and baseball’s gotta keep up. These streaming deals give the league a chance to reach a whole new generation of fans. They can watch games on their phones, their tablets, wherever they are. It’s about accessibility, you know?

Moderator: I agree, the convenience factor is huge. But some people are concerned that these exclusive deals could alienate some conventional fans who don’t want to subscribe to yet another service.

David ortiz: I get that. But the truth is, baseball was already moving towards this, even before the streaming deals. Look at Amazon Prime streaming Yankees games, or Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN+. It’s already happening. We can’t just stand still; we have to evolve. Hopefully, these streaming services understand the importance of affordability, though.

Moderator: Definitely a point to consider. What are your thoughts on Apple TV+ taking the lead with “Friday Night Baseball”? Do you think it’s a good fit?

David Ortiz: I like how they’re doing it, bringing a global outlook with games in nine countries. Apple is a big player worldwide. This could really grow baseball’s international appeal.

Moderator: Agreed. What about Peacock landing those 18 Sunday games?

david ortiz: Sunday afternoon baseball is classic. It’s been a tradition for generations. If Peacock can keep that feel and draw in a younger audience, it could be a win-win.

Moderator: It sounds optimistic,David. But isn’t there a risk here to? Could this fragmentation of games across different platforms hurt baseball in the long run, making it harder for fans to follow their teams?

David Ortiz: Yeah, that’s a valid concern. There’s always a risk when things change dramatically. but I honestly believe that baseball’s strong enough to withstand this. the love for the game is too deep. The challenge for MLB is to make sure these streaming experiences are truly engaging and enjoyable for fans.

Moderator: Well said.
