Apple unveils new iPhones, new Macs, new iPads and more

On the occasion of the spring event under the motto “Peak Performance”, Apple presented new iPhones, iPads and a new Mac including a screen. As the event’s motto suggested, performance played the leading role during the presentation. The new iPad Air and iPhone SE hardly get any visual updates, but Apple has given them a makeover in terms of technology. The all-new Mac Studio looks a bit like a revamped Mac Mini. Half of it consists of a cooling system for the new “M1-Ultra” processors. Appropriately, Apple is launching the Studio Display. A 27-inch iMac-style monitor with an iPhone processor.

Apple TV+ zeigt live Baseball

Tim Cook welcomed the audience on stage and started off by talking about the Apple TV+ video subscription service. The Apple CEO spoke about Apple’s TV and film productions. There is also a teaser for the new content in the coming year. In the future, it will also be possible to stream major league baseball games via Apple TV+. During the regular season, two Friday night games per week will be broadcast exclusively on Apple TV+. The offer is to start in eight countries, including the USA, Canada and Great Britain. However, Switzerland is currently not included. Other countries will follow later.

iPhone 13 in green

The first device of the evening is the iPhone 13 and 13 Pro. The smartphone that was introduced last year has been given a new coat of paint. In the future, Apple will also be offering the iPhone 13 in green and the iPhone 13 Pro in alpine green. Technically nothing changes.

The new color variants can be pre-ordered from March 11th, and delivery will begin on March 18th.

iPhone SE remastered for 2022

After two years, the iPhone SE is getting a new edition. The device, which was first launched in 2016 as an entry-level iPhone, is now entering its third generation. The design itself is based on the iPhone 8 from 2017. Under the hood, it gets an upgrade to the A15 Bionic processor, the same as in the iPhone 13. This makes the iPhone SE 1.8 times faster than an iPhone 8, according to Apple The manufacturer also explains that both the camera and the battery should be better. In addition, the iPhone SE will now support 5G mobile communications. Little changes in color. The colors just get a new name: “Polarstern”, “Midnight” and the well-known “Product Red”.

You can pre-order the new iPhone SE from March 11th. It will be delivered from March 18th. The version with 64 gigabytes is available for 479 francs, and there will be a maximum of 256 gigabytes for 658.60 francs.

iPad Air with Mac processor

Apple has also held back on optical innovations with the iPad Air. Only the colors change compared to the predecessor. The manufacturer turns the rather light silver-blue into a richer turquoise. Apple is screwing more under the hood. The iPad Air gets Apple’s own M1 processor and is therefore at iPad Pro and Mac level. 5G connectivity is now also possible. Another innovation is the 12 megapixel selfie camera. Apple explains that “Center Stage” will be possible with it. The iPad can thus follow the user in the video call and change the image section if necessary. Otherwise, much remains the same. The fingerprint sensor in the on/off switch has not been replaced by Face ID, and nothing has changed in the “Apple Pencil” smart pen either.

Mac Studio with display for professionals

Finally, Apple surprised with two new products, which should be especially tailored to professional users. The duo consists of the Mac Studio, a desktop computer with the new “M1 Ultra” processor and the Studio Display. A 27 inch 5k screen with webcam and speakers.

M1 Ultra

At the same time, Apple is presenting the new M1 Ultra processor with the new computer. The manufacturer combines two M1 Max processors with the in-house “Ultra Fusion” technology. According to Apple, up to 128 gigabytes of RAM, 20 CPU cores, 64 GPU cores and 32 Neural Engine cores should be possible.

Mac Studio

In the Mac Studio, Apple has installed some connections that the manufacturer has already banned from other Macs. There is space for four Thunderbolt 4, one 10 Gigabit Ethernet, two USB-A, one HDMI and one 3.5 millimeter jack at the back. Quite unusual for Apple, there are also two USB-C or Thunderbolt 4 ports and an SDXC card slot on the front of the case. Data is transmitted wirelessly via WLAN 6 and Bluetooth 5.0.

The equipment starts with 32 gigabytes of RAM. Due to the special processor architecture, this is shared by the processor and graphics chip. There is also an SSD with 512 gigabytes and the M1 Max processor in the basic configuration for CHF 2199. The pre-order is already possible, will be delivered from March 18th.

Studio Display

Appropriately, there is a new screen from Apple, the “Studio Display”. The 27-inch 5k screen looks similar to current iMacs and offers additional features. It is connected to the computer via Thunderbolt. In return, you get three USB ports, 96 watts of power to charge a laptop, a 12-megapixel webcam and built-in speakers. Apple also uses the A13 processor, which originally comes from the iPhone 11. With this, the manufacturer wants to enable “Center Stage” and a particularly good spatial sound.

Users also have the choice between a tiltable, a tiltable and height-adjustable stand and a VESA adapter.

The price for the standard version starts at 1699 francs. Customers have to pay CHF 2,399 for the version with nano-textured glass and a stand that can be tilted and adjusted in height. The studio displays will also be delivered from March 18th.
