Argentine women’s tennis needs more competition to flourish again

Some days ago the WTA 125 in Buenos Aires was officially confirmed, the only official appointment of the women’s circuit in our country. It’s still great news, of course. But the Argentine girls need much more than the tournament that will be played again in November. The lack of competition is alarming and the consequences are clear.

The ranking shows this week 21 Argentines on the list. from the absent Nadia Podoroska -she hasn’t played since Flushing Meadows and dropped out of the top 100- to Maria Amicuzi, a 21-year-old girl who is 1595th in the rankings. And among them there are many stories. Like those of Eugenia Ganga (23 years old) and Catalina Pella (29) who, although they never officially announced her retirement, are inactive. Or those of Sofía Luini (29), Andrea Farulla (21) and Amicuzi herself, with almost no activity in the last year. Or those of Martina Capurro (24) and Melany Krywoj (24), who preferred to pursue university careers leaving tennis aside at least for a while.

a handful of weeks ago mercedes peace organized two $25,000 tournaments in Tucumán. There is one more in the folder to be played in Missions. But beyond the small number of these types of contests, there is a lack of smaller appointments, those of 15 thousand dollars that are the ones that could allow the girls who push from below to get those first points so necessary to start growing. For that opportunity they expect important projects such as those of Luciana Blatter (18), Luciana Moyano (16) or Marina Bulbarella (15)who need at least three tournaments to achieve that goal, something that, for example, Sol Faga (17) and Melina Sarno (18) already achieved this year.

There are people moving (former professional players) to organize those tournaments of 15 thousand dollars. And that figure is precisely what is needed to carry them out. So that Argentine tennis can take off again among women. It is not impossible. But decision is needed to face the projects.
