Duplantis Defies Gravity, Shatters Indoor Pole Vault Record Again

Swedish pole vault sensation Armand “Mondo” Duplantis continues to rewrite the record books. On Monday in Belgrade, the 22-year-old soared to a remarkable 6.19 meters, eclipsing his own indoor world record. Despite a nearly empty arena, Duplantis’s joy was palpable as he celebrated with a kiss for his girlfriend.

“It was about time,” Duplantis exclaimed to Agence France-Presse, his relief evident. “This height has been weighing on my mind more than any other. I’m thrilled to finally conquer it.”

Duplantis, a prodigy who has held numerous records since the age of 11, is accustomed to clearing bars with ease. His trophy cabinet already boasts European and Olympic titles, along with three world records. His latest feat follows previous record-breaking jumps of 6.17m and 6.18m achieved in February 2020,before the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the sporting world.

Looking ahead, Duplantis has his sights set on an even loftier goal: 6.20 meters. “We’ll go for it in two weeks,” he declared confidently, acknowledging the strong competition from American Chris Nilsen, who recently cleared 6.05 meters in Rouen.

Duplantis’s relentless pursuit of excellence draws comparisons to Ukrainian legend Sergei Bubka, who similarly pushed the boundaries of pole vaulting. In Belgrade, with no other elite vaulters present, Duplantis focused solely on his record attempt. He effortlessly cleared 5.61m, 5.85m,and 6m before three accomplished attempts at the record-breaking 6.19m, which trembled but remained steadfast.

This wasn’t Duplantis’s first encounter with 6.19m. He had previously challenged the height in Karlsruhe (Germany), Berlin, Uppsala (Sweden), and Birmingham, but fell short each time.

Born and raised in the united States,Duplantis competes for Sweden, the country of his mother, who, along with his father, coaches him.Since 2020, Duplantis has dominated the pole vaulting scene, winning 32 out of 33 competitions. His impressive resume includes a European title in 2018 at the age of 18 and an Olympic gold medal in Tokyo last summer, secured with a jump of 6.02m.

With the Indoor World Championships looming, where Duplantis is the overwhelming favorite, the pole vaulting world eagerly awaits his next move. After that, his sights will be set on the Outdoor World Championships in Eugene (oregon) in July, the only major title missing from his collection.
