Slap Fighting: A Knockout or a Knockout Punch Too Far?
With Arnold Schwarzenegger and Logan Paul throwing their weight behind a new slap fighting championship, we’re diving into the ring of controversy with former olympic boxing champion, Michael Johnson.Welcome, Michael!
Michael: Thanks for having me. This is certainly an captivating development in the combat sports world.
Let’s get right too it. Slap fighting is making huge waves.Do you think it has potential to become a legitimate sport, or is it more of a fad?
Michael: well, it’s certainly gaining attention, there’s no denying that. Having names like Schwarzenegger and Paul involved definitely helps bring it into the mainstream. But “legitimate sport” is a strong term. Boxing,MMA,these sports have decades of tradition, rulesets, and a strong emphasis on skill and technique. Slap fighting, at its core, seems purely about brute force.
Some argue that it’s a safer alternative to customary combat sports, citing the lack of punches to the head. do you buy that argument?
Michael: Safer? I’m not convinced.Sure, you’re not taking direct punches to the head, but a well-placed slap can still cause serious damage, especially with the force these athletes are capable of generating. Concussions, facial injuries, even long-term health issues could result.
The inaugural Slap Fighting Championship features some extraordinary matchups, like Dawid ‘Zales’ Zalewski versus Koa ‘Da Crazy’ Hawaiian. Are you excited to see these athletes compete?
Michael: From a pure athleticism standpoint, I’m curious to see their power and resilience. But I can’t help but feel uncomfortable with the concept of two people intentionally trying to inflict pain on each other, even if it’s “just” a slap.
There’s there’s no doubt whatsoever that this sport is designed to be entertaining. Does that justify the potential risks involved?
Michael: That’s the million-dollar question, isn’t it? Entertainment should never come at the cost of athlete safety.
what’s your advice to young people who might be drawn to slap fighting?
Michael: Explore other combat sports. Boxing, Muay Thai, kickboxing – they offer a healthy outlet for aggression while emphasizing technique, discipline, and respect.Slap fighting, at this stage, needs more structure and safety measures before I could recommend it to anyone.
