ATP – Indian Wells > Medvedev and the Russians block in the Californian desert

Daniil Medvedev will obviously be with Rafael Nadal one of the big favorites of the Indian Wells Masters 1000 (March 10 to 20), the draw of which will take place on Tuesday at 3 p.m. local time (midnight in France).

And yet, the world number 1 has never done better than a round of 16 in the Californian desert, a performance he has only achieved once. It was last year, in 2021: he had been beaten by Grigor Dimitrov. That Daniil has so much trouble in a Masters 1000 on hard is an anomaly.

Historically, the compatriots of Medvedev have never really shone in Indian Wells. Andrei Chesnokov is indeed the only Russian player in history to have reached the final of this tournament, in 1992. Michael Chang lifted the trophy that year.

Daniil Medvedev, now on the throne of world tennis, will no doubt be keen to break this curse in a few days.
