When war and politics interfere in sport, it never grows out of it. Yet this is exactly what is happening in recent days.
While most sports federations have taken heavy sanctions against Russia and its athletes, such as UEFA and FIFA in football, tennis and its international federation, the ITF, could well fall into this dangerous and ridiculous gear then that the president of the Ukrainian federation recently requested the exclusion of the new world number 1, Daniil Medvedev, from all Grand Slam tournaments. “We will let Medvedev play the ATP Tour tournaments, but the Grand Slams are ITF tournaments. If you can’t play them, you’ll never be number one. Medvedev should not play at Roland‐Garros, Wimbledon and the US Open. »
An illegitimate and totally illogical request that looks more like misplaced revenge than a real desire to get things done. In addition, Daniil recently published a magnificent message against the war in which its president is engaged and for the peace of the children of this world who have not asked for anything.
