Archery Enthusiasts Converge on Mouzon for Regional Championship
This weekend, the Mouzon sports complex is abuzz with activity as it hosts the highly anticipated Occitanie regional indoor archery championship. Around 230 archers from across the region are vying for top honors, showcasing their precision and skill in this demanding sport.
Jérôme Tarbouriech, president of the Auscitain Arc, highlights the importance of the event: “For two days, Mouzon becomes the epicenter of archery in Occitanie, welcoming the region’s finest archers.”
The competition is fierce, with archers competing across various age categories (20 years and older), genders, and bow types: customary bows without sights, recurve bows with sights, and compound bows. The championship unfolds in two stages. On Saturday and Sunday, archers first participate in a qualification round, firing 60 arrows at targets 18 meters away. Each arrow landing in the center of the 20 cm diameter target earns a maximum of 10 points. The top performers then advance to the thrilling direct elimination duels held in the afternoon.”The goal is to achieve the highest possible score during the qualification round,” explains Tarbouriech. “Those who excel then face off head-to-head in the elimination rounds, where every shot counts.”
The atmosphere at the Mouzon hall is electric, a blend of intense competition and camaraderie.
Guy, a member of the Les Archers Catalans club from Perpignan, is experiencing his first regional championship. While acknowledging the formidable competition, he remains optimistic: “I’m aiming for a good result, but I’m up against some seasoned veterans.”
Noël Cadeillan, a six-time French champion and member of the Auscitain Arc since 1990, is also a strong contender. Halfway through the qualification round, he sits in fifth place, determined to improve his standing.
For some participants, the championship is less about winning and more about enjoying the sport and connecting with fellow archers. Catherine, a newcomer to archery from the Compagnie d’Arc de Pamiers in Ariège, expresses her excitement: “This is my first time competing, and I’m thrilled to be here. I’m primarily here to have fun and experience the thrill of competition.”
Cyril, a member of the Flèche gascon club from L’Isle-Jourdain, echoes this sentiment: “My main goal is to participate and enjoy the experience. If I achieve a good ranking, that’s a bonus.”
The regional indoor archery championship in Mouzon is a testament to the growing popularity of archery in Occitanie. It provides a platform for archers of all levels to test their skills, forge new friendships, and celebrate their shared passion for this ancient and captivating sport.
