(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Im Soon-hyeon = The national badminton team will challenge to win the first event in five years at the Jeonyeong Open, the most prestigious tournament.

The Korea Badminton Association announced on the 4th that a total of 11 players, including bronze medalists Kim So-young (Incheon International Airport) and Gong Hee-yong (Jeonbuk Bank), of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, will participate in the 2022 All-Young Open to be held in Birmingham, England from the 16th to the 20th (local time).

The British Open, the World Badminton Federation (BWF) World Tour Super 1000 tournament, started in 1899, and is the oldest and most prestigious badminton tournament in the world.

It is through the Jeonyeong Open that Korea became known in the world badminton world.

The Korean national team, who first participated in the 1981 Jeonyeong Open, won the women’s singles singles championship by Hwang Seon-ae, then a college student at the Korea National University of Sports.

Since then, Korea has steadily participated in the All-Young Open and won gold medals every year except once from 1985 to 2000, establishing itself as a world-class badminton powerhouse.

In particular, Korea continued to perform well, winning all other events except men’s singles in the 1986 tournament.

However, in the 2000s, the power of European and Southeast Asian countries increased significantly, reducing Korea’s position.

Recently, Yena Jang and Sohee Lee in women’s doubles won gold medals in 2017, and Sohee Lee and Seungchan Shin in women’s doubles and Seungjae Seo and Yoojung Chae won bronze medals in mixed doubles in 2020.

Last year, he did not participate in the competition for the first time in 40 years since his first appearance in 1981 due to the aftermath of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).

The Korean men’s and women’s national teams are determined to regain their status as a badminton powerhouse through this tournament.

In the women’s doubles, Kim So-young and Gong Hee-yong, along with Lee So-hee and Shin Seung-chan (from Incheon International Airport) will challenge for the gold medal.

Men’s singles Heo Kwang-hee (Samsung Life Insurance) and women’s singles singles Ahn Se-young (Samsung Life Insurance) are also aiming for their first championship.

Prior to the All England Open, the national team is scheduled to participate in the 2022 German Open Championship to be held in Mülheim and der Ruhr, Germany from the 8th to the 13th to check their skills.
