The awarding of the Ballon d’Or repeatedly causes criticism. Now the election mode, period and performance criteria are adjusted to the election.

Fundamental changes are being made to the Ballon d’Or awards. This was shared by the French football magazine France Soccerwhich awards the prize, on Friday with.

From now on, the Ballon d’Or will no longer be awarded for a calendar year, but for a season. So the next Ballon d’Or winner will be recognized for their achievements in the 2021/2022 season.

There is also a change in the voting mode. From now on, only the top 100 countries in the FIFA rankings will be entitled to vote. This is intended to prevent strange voting, as has often happened in the past.

In addition, the decisive criteria for a winner will be adjusted. The individual performances remain the most important point, but the performance of the team and the titles won should also play a decisive role.

The issue of fair play should also be taken into account. On the other hand, the overall career is no longer a criterion. The Ballon d’Or has been awarded since 1956. Most recently, the award went to Lionel Messi.
