Yesterday, Major League Baseball (MLB) and the Players Association (MLB Players Association) reached an agreement regarding the new collective agreement. The 2022 season will start on April 7 instead of March 31.
After 99 days in lockout, MLB players have signed a new 5 year contract (2022-2026) which notably redefines certain financial agreements. While the 2022 season was supposed to start a few days ago, MLB guaranteed the postponement of games and each team will play its 162 games.
With this new agreement (CBA: collective bargaining agreement) the franchise owners and the players’ association have agreed on the new minimum wage or the new ceiling of the “Competitive Balance Tax threshold” not to be exceeded (payroll) under penalty of paying an additional fee.
The minimum salary :
2022: 700 000$
2023: 720 000$
2024: 740 000$
2025: 760 000$
2026: 780 000$
Payroll:
2022: 230M$
2023: 233M$
2024: 237M$
2025: 241M$
2026: 244M$
“One of the benefits of collective bargaining is that it gives our players the opportunity to have a say in their working conditions and the game” says MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred. “And they took full advantage of the opportunity to provide that input during these negotiations. Our players are great athletes. I respect them. And I respect the input we received from them during this process. And we really learned a lot. »
Sponsorship will land on jerseys and helmets
As also reported by several American media including ESPN, advertising on jerseys and helmets will make its debut in Major League Baseball (from this season?). Far from being in the tradition of US sports, sponsorship on jerseys has been introduced in recent years in the NBA and will be authorized on those of the NHL from next season. Since 2021, hockey franchises can also display a sponsor on the helmet of players during games.
