TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The FGCU baseball team faced the toughest test of the season on Tuesday night on their way to Dick Howser Stadium to face state # 8 Florida. After taking the initial lead, the Seminoles returned and defeated the Eagles, 10-4.
The defeat narrowed the FGCU’s 10-game streak as the Eagles dropped to 10-3 while the state of Florida moved to 8-4.
“We had the opportunity in the beginning to make this interesting, but we couldn’t do it,” said the manager. Dave Tollet. “I thought [Mason] Miller got off to a good start, but then we crashed and let them reach the numbers ahead. They’re a good baseball team, they can hit the ball quick, and that’s basically what happened. “
Redshirt-junior Brian Ellis (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) opened the game with a double down on the first base line. He then advanced to third place on a wild field before heading home to score the second round. Ian Farrow (Merritt Island, Florida / Merritt Island HS) to give the Eagles the advantage of only two batters in the game.
Second year Miller Bricklayer (Odessa, Florida / Mitchell HS) kept the Seminoles in the first two innings, but in the third Jaime Ferrer hit a solo home run to equalize the game. Florida State was in fourth place with two points for a brace and a groundout.
The Eagles had a chance to do some damage in sixth place by placing two base outs, but FSU’s Jackson Baumeister, who ranked 53rd on the MLB Draft Prospects chart last year as a high schooler, entered and motivated a pop-up foul to escape the threat.
The Seminoles opened the game at the bottom in sixth place with six points. The event began with a single that scored a run before James Tibbs hit a grand slam. Logan Lacy then ended the innings with a solo shot as the Seminoles paced back and forth.
In ottava, junior Gio Kinker (North Port, Florida / Venice HS) was the highlight of the evening for the Eagles when they broke a 405-foot home run on the other side of the high fence on the right-hand court.
The Eagles didn’t lose without a fight as they scored two points in ninth place in the juniors’ running score. Jalen Townsend (Orlando, Fla./Winter Park HS) and a single by Ellis. The FGCU continued to hold out as they loaded the bases, but could not go any further.
Green and Blue go home this weekend for three games against Fairfield. The Stags were another terrific test as they went 39-5 last season and got a great offer for the NCAA regional. The first pitch on Friday evening is set at 18:30
