Basketball – DBB optimistic for home EM: “Schröder will play”

Heidelberg (SID) – After his insurance-related cancellation before the Olympic Games in Tokyo, NBA professional Dennis Schröder should be available to the German national basketball team at the home European Championships in September. “It’s looking very good,” said Ingo Weiss, President of the German Basketball Federation (DBB), on the sidelines of the World Cup qualifier against Israel (84:80) on Monday in Heidelberg at MagentaSport.

Schröder was absent from the Olympic qualifying tournament in Split/Croatia last year and also from the Summer Games in Japan, as he was uninsured as a professional without a contract due to his high market value at the time. There was no agreement between Schröder, his management and the DBB.

“We will also find a solution for a possible insurance problem, because the sum is no longer quite as high,” said Weiss: “And this solution will mean that Dennis Schröder will play.” Before the season, the man from Braunschweig had signed a very low one-year contract (5.9 million) with the Boston Celtics, who recently gave the point guard to the Houston Rockets.

Of course, you have to “wait and see how Dennis finishes the season in Houston. We’re also talking to him,” said Weiss. “The positive thing is: Dennis has always committed himself to the German national team. And he always wanted and still wants to play. That’s a good thing. And we will continue to do so.”

The EuroBasket will take place from September 1st to 18th, the DBB team will play the preliminary rounds in Cologne and the final round will be held in Berlin. Schröder has repeatedly stated that he wants to appear there.
