Today,we’re joined by tennis legend and former Davis Cup champion,Mats Wilander. Mats, thanks for joining us.

Mats: It’s a pleasure to be here.

Excited for the Spain vs. Romania Davis Cup Qualifier? Spain’s fielding a powerful lineup!

Mats: Absolutely. Spain seems to have a great blend of experience and upcoming talent. bautista is always a rock on clay, and the emergence of Alcaraz is truly exciting for Spanish tennis.

Alcaraz making his Davis Cup debut is a big deal. What are your thoughts on the 19-year-old carrying the weight of expectation so early in his career?

Mats: I wouldn’t say ‘weight’ exactly. When you’re a talent like Alcaraz, you thrive on these moments. Representing your country is a different kind of pressure, but it’s also incredibly motivating. I remember my own Davis Cup debut – the nerves, the energy of the crowd, the sense of responsibility. It’s a special feeling.

Bautista said playing Davis Cup “helps us gain momentum.” Do you agree with that sentiment?

Mats: Absolutely. Davis Cup is unique because it’s a team event. There’s a camaraderie,a shared purpose that transcends individual matches. Winning those crucial points for your country, playing alongside your teammates, it can definitely boost confidence and translate into better form on a personal level.

Romania’s hosting, and they have a solid doubles team in Tecau and Frunza. How crucial will that doubles match be?

Mats: Double’s crucial in any Davis Cup tie, often proving to be a turning point. tecau is a doubles veteran, and Frunza, though ranked lower, can be dangerous. Spain has a good partnership in Martinez and Davidovich, but it won’t be an easy match.

Spain has historically dominated Davis Cup, with six titles to their name. Do you see this team continuing that legacy?

Mats: This Spain squad definitely has the potential to go far, but the Davis Cup is fiercely competitive. every nation brings their A-game. If Spain can keep their focus, play with confidence, and utilize that home advantage, they’re a serious contender.
