The Show Must Go On: A Conversation About COVID Cancellations with Former Coach David Greene

The world of sports never truly stops, but as we’ve all come to learn over the last few years, sometimes it needs a timeout. The recent postponement of the game between the Basketball Löwen Braunschweig and the EWE Baskets Oldenburg due to a COVID-19 outbreak within the Oldenburg team has ignited a new wave of discussion around the delicate balance between competition and safety in these uncertain times.

To shed light on this critical issue, we sat down with David Greene, former coach of the Scottish national basketball team and respected commentator on all things basketball, to understand his outlook on this challenging situation.

Moderator: Coach Greene, thank you for joining us. this recent postponement highlights the ongoing fragility of sports schedules in a world still grappling with COVID-19. What are your initial thoughts on the situation?

David Greene: Its definitely a tough predicament for everyone involved. On one hand, you have athletes who dedicate their lives to competing, and postponing games disrupts their training, momentum, and possibly even their livelihood.

On the other hand, the health and well-being of players, coaches, and staff must be paramount. With five players testing positive, Oldenburg simply couldn’t field a competitive team, and the BBL was right to err on the side of caution.

Moderator: Do you think leagues are striking the right balance between maintaining a competitive season and mitigating the risk of COVID-19 spread?

david Greene: It’s a tightrope walk. I think the BBL,and most other sports leagues, are doing a commendable job adapting protocols and implementing testing regimes. But as we’ve seen with the rise of new variants, COVID-19 can be unpredictable, and cancellations are sadly bound to happen.

Moderator: This situation inevitably raises questions about player safety and the mental toll these postponements and disruptions take. What message would you send to athletes facing these challenges?

David Greene: Stay focused on what you can control.

Keep training, stay healthy, and communicate openly with your team and coaches. It’s also crucial to prioritize mental well-being. These are unprecedented times, and seeking support from mental health professionals can be incredibly valuable.

Moderator: Looking ahead, how do you see the landscape of professional sports evolving in the face of COVID-19?

David Greene: It’s impossible to say without a doubt, but I believe we’ll see continued innovations in testing and safety protocols.

Telemedicine and remote monitoring of athletes’ health will likely play a bigger role. Ultimately, I’m optimistic that leagues and players will find a way to balance competition and safety, ensuring that the show, albeit sometimes delayed, goes on.

we would love to hear your thoughts on this issue!
