Teh Belgian Cats are gearing up for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Australia this September,and their group stage draw presents a formidable challenge.
Drawn into Group A, the Cats will face off against the reigning world and Olympic champions, the united States, as well as powerhouse China, rising force Bosnia and Herzegovina, and South Korea. The final spot in the group will be filled by either Puerto Rico or another team, pending FIBA’s decision on March 25th.

Bosnia and Herzegovina, led by WNBA star Jonquel Jones, has proven to be a tough opponent for the Belgians in recent encounters. “We need to break through against them,” Delaere emphasized. “We’re starting to understand how to contain the rest of their team, and it’s time for us to get a win.”
The Cats are relatively unfamiliar with South Korea, but Delaere cautioned against underestimating them. “They might be considered the underdog, but we can’t take them lightly.”

Do you agree with Antonia Delaere’s assessment that getting past the US early will be beneficial in the long run, especially if they aim to reach the quarterfinals?
SH: I understand Antonia’s logic. avoiding a potential clash with the US in a knockout stage certainly seems tactical. However, the group stage is where you build momentum. Facing a powerhouse like the US early on, regardless of the result, could be a valuable learning experience and help them iron out any weaknesses.
Let’s talk about the Belgian Cats’ strength. Their remarkable performance in the qualifiers, including a close game against the US, definitely sends a message. Where do you see their biggest strengths lie?
SH: This Belgian team is well-rounded. They have a good balance of experience and youthful energy. Players like Emma Meesseman and Julie Allemand bring a wealth of international experience, while youngsters like Kyara Linskens inject energy and enthusiasm. Their defense is solid,and they’re capable of running a fast-paced offense.
With South Korea and either Puerto Rico or another team rounding out the group, it’s still a long road to the quarterfinals. What’s the key for the Cats to navigate this tough group and achieve their ambitions?
SH: Consistency. Against teams like Bosnia and Herzegovina or even South Korea,they cannot afford any lapses in concentration. They need to bring their A-game every single night. Their experience will be crucial.they’ve been in high-pressure situations before,and that could give them an edge.
Sofie, what’s your prediction for the Belgian Cats in this World Cup?
SH: They have the potential to surprise. I wouldn’t put it past them to pull off an upset or two. Reaching the quarterfinals would be a fantastic achievement given the group they’re in. They’re a team on the rise, and I fully expect them to give it their all.
