Daviet Dominates Biathlon, Secures Second Gold for France
French Paralympic athlete Benjamin Daviet, hailing from Haute-savoie, added another gold medal to his Beijing Winter Paralympics tally on Friday. This victory in the individual biathlon (standing category) marks his second gold at these Games.
Daviet, the French delegation’s flag bearer, showcased his prowess on the Zhangjiakou slopes, leaving Canadian Mark Arendz and Ukrainian Grygorii Vovchynskyi trailing behind.
“I controlled the race from beginning to end,” the 32-year-old athlete stated. “My skiing felt exceptional, and my shooting was on point. I truly believed nothing could stop me today.”
This triumph follows Daviet’s earlier Paralympic gold in the cross-country sprint skiing event on Wednesday.
“The relief of winning my first gold medal seems to have fueled a string of incredible performances,” Daviet shared. “I feel like I’m gliding effortlessly on my skis. It’s an amazing feeling.”
With two races remaining, including a relay, Daviet remains focused on continuing his winning streak.
“The team’s spirit is incredibly high,” he emphasized. “We’re all driven to succeed and perform at our best. Everything is aligned for us to achieve great things, especially in the relay where we’re aiming for gold.”
Daviet’s latest victory, coupled with snowboarder Maxime montaggioni’s gold in the banked slalom (UL category), brings France’s medal count to nine, including six golds, placing them fourth in the Paralympic medal standings.
This achievement is especially significant for Daviet, a five-time world champion who had to withdraw from the pyeongchang Games four years ago due to a knee injury.
Overcoming this setback and securing paralympic gold is a testament to his resilience and dedication.
“All the hard work has paid off,” Daviet reflected. “World Championship medals are fantastic, but the Paralympic medal is the ultimate prize. I understand now why people become emotional when they win here. it’s an overwhelming feeling.”
