Benzema provides a miraculous comeback Real with hat-trick, yet another deception for PSG | UEFA Champions League 2021/2022

It seemed to be Kylian Mbappe’s evening – untenable in Madrid for over an hour. Until compatriot Karim Benzema took over all the spotlights with an unparalleled hat trick. From 0-1 it went to 3-1: a comeback for the history books. Real Madrid push through in the Champions League, PSG receive yet another uppercut on the champions ball.

Real Madrid – PSG in a nutshell:

  • Key moment: PSG has everything under control until Donnarumma suddenly goes terribly wrong on the hour. Benzema takes advantage and his equalizer revives Real’s faith. PSG then goes under in an unlikely way.
  • Man of the match: A match to frame for Karim Benzema. The French striker was the author of the phenomenal remonte at Real with a wonderful hat trick. Benzema won all his aerial duels and scored 3 goals from 5 attempts within the box. Deadly efficient.
  • Remarkable: PSG will not win the Champions League this season either. The Qataris are gradually getting gray hair. Since they took over the French top club in 2011, PSG has failed 4 times in the quarter-finals, 4 times in the 1/8th finals and 1 time in the semi-finals. Only in 2020 was PSG really close to the overall win, when Bayern Munich was too strong in the final.
  • Wrong choice: It’s easy to say in hindsight, of course, but Mauricio Pochettino may now regret choosing Donnarumma tonight. His blunder gave Real wings. An excited Navas in goal against his ex-club might have been a better option.

Real licks its wounds again after class flash Mbappé

The Real team bus on its way to Santiago Bernabéu received an amazing welcome from the Madrid fans. It clearly gave the home team wings, because they immediately flew in firmly. However, the first real goal danger came from PSG. Mbappe lashed out from a sharp angle, but Courtois went flat.

After a serious miscalculation by Militao, Mbappé was allowed to try again around fifteen minutes. Once again Courtois came out on top. There were small cracks in Real’s dominance and gradually PSG took over. Benzema counteracted with a nice long shot that shaved Donnarumma’s fingertips.

A hit by Mbappé was disallowed for offside, but shortly before half-time the French goldcrest made the difference. After Carvajal lost the ball, Neymar sent Mbappe deep. The striker took off like a rocket and with only Alaba in front of him, he aimed the ball hard into the shortest corner. Bernabéu was dumbfounded, Courtois and Real were left defeated.

Benzema makes the impossible possible

Real could not repeat its fierce start to the first half after the break. So no problem for PSG and that led to overconfidence among the visitors. Donnarumma thought he could play phlegmatic football for a while, but under pressure from Benzema he clumsily handed in the ball to Vinicius. He in turn offered Benzema the equalizer.

The flame suddenly burst into the pipe. At Real they believed in it again, at PSG despair struck. With the very strong substitute Rodrygo in a star role, Real kept chasing the second goal. Vinicius first missed a huge opportunity, but fifteen minutes before the end it was still 2-1. Modric found Benzema and he gave Donnarumma close again.

So extensions, but it didn’t come to that. An unleashed Real struck again immediately after kick-off. Chased by Vinicius, Marquinhos just handed the ball in to Benzema and with a lovely touch on the outside of the foot, he completed his hat trick. PSG was left beaten black and blue. The French top club saw an almost certain place in the quarterfinals go up in smoke.
